Charles "Basketball" Bassey was discovered in Lagos, Nigeria at 12 selling fried chicken on the roadside, wearing flip flops too small for his feet, playing soccer until a coach saw his size and pointed him toward basketball instead
drafted 53rd overall by the 76ers in 2021. Waived by Philadelphia a year later. Picked up by the Spurs, tore his ACL in December 2023, fought his way back. Waived by the Hawks in 2025 before a single regular-season game.
Instead of accepting offers from the EuroLeague for MORE money even though he came from NOTHING he stayed in the G League and on ten day contracts making a fraction of what he could've earned in the EuroLeague just to stay one phone call away from the NBA. Bounced across four different NBA teams in one season, never knowing if it would pay off but still playing training chasing his DREAM instead of money this passion doesnt exist in the modern NBA anymore Charles "Basketball" Basseys story is so inspirational because he NEVER GAVE UP ON HIS DREAM even though EVERYONE doubted him

Charles Bassey’s of @warriors story is one of those journeys that truly inspires you.
I keep saying this, 90% of Nigeria’s future NBA players are probably still playing football. The real question is: how do we identify these talents and convince them to give basketball a chance?
Shout-out to Coach Dele of @AviCennaInt (Avi-Cenna International School Lagos), the man who coached Charles Bassey. A great guy who played a role in a story that continues to inspire young Nigerian basketball players.
Nigeria is full of untapped talent. We just need the right people, the right development system, and the right opportunities to discover them.
