The Pakistani elite and intelligentsia love to witter on about stability, FDI, GDP growth and a whole lot of statistical mumbo jumbo, all to meet IMF's diktat. Be patient, say the technocrats: prosperity will trickle down. It has been trickling for decades, and the bottom has barely felt a drop. For tens of millions of Pakistanis, none of this matters diddly squat. They are worried about their next meal and keeping a roof over their heads. That eats up everything they have, leaving nothing to invest in their children's future, and so in the nation's. No country has built a viable economy, or defended itself, on children who can't read and can't grow to their full height. A stunted, undereducated population is no foundation for a state that wants to compete, export and be secure. Yet that is where we stand. Almost 40% of Pakistani children are stunted. A quarter of primary-school-aged children are out of school, and 75 percent of those who do attend cannot read and understand a simple text. Stunting has barely budged in two decades, from 41.6% in 2001-02 to 40.2% in 2018, well above the South Asian average of 31.7%. Poverty tells the same story. It did fall for years, but those gains came mostly from people leaving the farm for low-quality service jobs, and they proved fragile. The World Bank now estimates that nearly half of all Pakistanis live below $4.20 a day, up from about 45 percent in 2018-19. And the vast majority have no real voice in their own destiny. Justice? Forget it. The East Asian economies that took off (Korea, Taiwan, China, and more recently Vietnam) put mass literacy, basic health and nutrition first, before they had much else. A poor country, and Pakistan is one, must get these right before it talks about anything fancier. Until a family can feed and educate its children, the rest is talk.

They just won't stop. This is not about counterterrorism.
🚨🇮🇱🇵🇸 Israeli forces have blown up two homes in the West Bank village of Beita, near Nablus... The homes belonged to Ibrahim and Zakaria Daoud, who the IDF accuses of carrying out 3 attacks against Israeli security forces, including an April 2025 bombing that seriously injured a soldier. Residents in the surrounding area were reportedly evacuated before the demolitions. The two men are in custody, but their family homes have now been destroyed. The legend Zia Mohyeddin. These were the kind of scholars and the artists that we produced, the pride of Pakistan. The greatest of poetry and prose reciters.

#LibyaWatch🇱🇾: On this week's Hanke's #CurrencyWatchlist, the Libyan dinar ranks as the WORLD'S 7TH WORST CURRENCY. The dinar has depreciated by 22% against the USD in the past year. Thanks to US-led regime change operations in 2011, Libya is a failed state.

Washington’s contempt for diplomacy is once again laid bare. President Trump’s admission that he never believed in the Islamabad MoU and considered it a waste of time exposes the hollowness of their diplomatic commitments. For Iran, this is nothing new. Washington has a long record of reneging on its commitments and treating international obligations as disposable whenever they become inconvenient. There is absolutely no justification for European states and other apologists for Washington to continue whitewashing U.S. misconduct and shielding it from accountability. Broken commitments cannot be excused, international law cannot be applied selectively, and no amount of political spin can absolve Washington of accountability.

First results indicate that I was right. No clear winner, meaning Netanyahu effectively won and will remain PM
There will be no clear winner in tomorrow's election - which is the best result for Netanyahu, who will see his term extended automatically, with a new election probably announced in 3 months (which again will have no clear winner). And if you ask me I think that that's it - Israel won't have another proper majority government. We are coming to the end of the Zionist experiment, when all the contradictions and abhorrence overcome it. And that's before and seperate from the Iran war, which I expect Netanyahu and Trump to resume in the coming weeks. This could very well have been Israel's last orderly and legal government, as far as the system is concerned. From now on I expect chaos

🇵🇸💢 NEW: 6-year-old Tahani Mohammed Saeed Shalalfa was killed Tuesday morning, shot by Israeli forces in al-Mawasi, west of Khan Younis, according to medical sources cited by the Palestinian outlet Shehab News. She is the second young girl killed by indiscriminate Israeli fire in the area's displacement tents this week, after 7-year-old Jouri al-Soufi who was killed yesterday. Ahmed Yassin Bseiso, a man, also died Tuesday of wounds from an Israeli strike on Thawra Street in central Gaza City several days ago, the report said. Israeli forces also opened heavy fire on tents of displaced families in western Rafah and shelled the Nuseirat and Bureij refugee camps in central Gaza, Felesteen reported. Damn, crazy what decades of suffocating and comprehensive sanctions by the Western world did... What's your point?
Bessent on Iran: Forty-seven years ago, the Iranian economy was bigger than the Turkish economy. Now the Turkish economy is three and a half to four times bigger. The Iranian economy has been stagnant for the past 47 years. It is all a decision by this regime.

Netanyahu’s opposition now accuses him of treason for attempting to manipulate Israel’s military leadership into attacking Iran to preserve his political career Last February, when Netanyahu and his Beltway Fifth Column manipulated Trump into a failed, economically disastrous war on Iran, the Pentagon Joint Chiefs followed in lockstep, and the Democratic Party leadership of Schumer and Jeffries quietly assented

In this obituary written for @dawn_com, I remember Gen Abdul Waheed Kakar, who is better known for resolving the 1993 political crisis (the “Kakar Formula”) without the Army taking over, but his contributions to Pakistan’s nuclear and missile programs, including the Shaheen series of missiles, were equally significant as he pushed backed against international pressure. RIP Gen Kakar. dawn.com/news/2039973/rememb…

For decades, Henry Kissinger’s famous adage has been widely quoted: “It may be dangerous to be America’s enemy, but to be America’s friend is fatal.” Welcome to the new world order: being Iranian may come with trials, but being Iran’s enemy is proving to be more difficult.
Iran’s FM Spox. Esmaeil Baghaei: Tehran’s hosting of senior military and security officials from Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Türkiye is a key development toward establishing regional diplomacy. Lasting stability and security in the Middle East can only be achieved by relying on the region’s own countries, and this meeting could pave the way for broader cooperation.
