Saw Marie Antoinette in the big screen for the first time in twenty years. My god what a stunningly beautiful, profound, and, yes, radical film. Blessed.
If you want a sincere deep-dive interview into Bourdain as a filmmaker, check out the latest episode of World Cinema History Podcast hosted by @etrommater
I had a blast!

She’ll be selling Negroni flavored ones on Wednesday at Snake and Jake’s from seven to nine thirty……..
Maybe some salted caramel as well
A practice run for this week’s book event. Kiddo wanted salted caramel and I guess I accidentally made a #Saints macaron?
Saw Marie Antoinette in the big screen for the first time in twenty years. My god what a stunningly beautiful, gutsy, and, yes, radical film. Blessed.
I’ve been saying for a while that my Krewe, of which I’ve been a member for 19 years, has gotten too old, too white, too establishment. The Gambit makes a great case of how/why this year’s choice of King is the embodiment of that. nola.com/gambit/commentary/j…

Hot Take: The "auteurs" of the 21st century aren't film directors anymore. They're TV showrunners.
Outside low-budget indies, is it time to redefine what an auteur actually is?

We're back! Season 4! We interviewed Todd Kennedy whose new book argues that famed Food and Travel host Anthony Bourdain should also be considered a cinematic auteur. Will his claim hold up under the sceptical eye of our panel? Tune in to see!

The Loyola Event I tweeted about being next week has been postponed—most likely until Nov 5. Specifics/advertising coming soon.

The protests in France started with teachers striking because of underfunding and overcrowding. There were rats in classrooms.
High School students then joined the protests. University students then joined the protests. Then trade unions joined.
The French police violently overreacted.
NONE of this has to do with Muslim people or immigrants. Anyone who says it's a Muslim problem is a lying bigot.
🇫🇷 French police have left protesters with injuries that human rights lawyers told outlets compare to those seen in conflict zones, as a student uprising over crumbling schools and the cost of living enters its fifth week.
Over Saturday and Sunday alone, French outlets StreetPress, Index and ViolencesPolicières(dot)fr collected several hundred videos and testimonies. Cases they documented include:
🔸 A 17-year-old in Saint-Étienne whose hand was torn off by a police grenade
🔸 A 17-year-old girl in Mulhouse who lost the sight in her left eye after being hit by a tear gas grenade
🔸 Protesters in Paris, Lyon, Strasbourg and Besançon beaten with batons and kicked while on the ground, including one held in a chokehold
France's police watchdog has opened at least 36 investigations into police violence against high school protesters. Christophe Calvao, president of the Paris Young Lawyers' Union, denounced "an increasingly systematic use of crowd-control measures that would normally be reserved for much more serious situations."
Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez has said police "must be able to use all intermediate weapons," and on Tuesday vowed to "step up" for the next mobilization. France Unbowed leader Jean-Luc Mélenchon said his party and unions know how to keep marches peaceful by deploying hundreds of volunteers, adding: "We could at least expect police to do something other than fire indiscriminately into the crowd."
Melenchon also noted that most European countries ban such grenades, and that Nuñez suspended them only to reinstate them "not even 48 hours" later.

France has universal healthcare, heavily subsidized childcare, free public preschool, FIVE weeks of paid vacation, a 35-hour standard workweek, robust unemployment and housing benefits, and nearly tuition-free public universities….
BECAUSE THEY PROTEST FOR IT AND GET IT DONE.
BTW if you've always wanted to see Marie Antoinette in theaters (or want to see it again), it's playing at AMC Elmwood on Saturday at 2 PM.

I'm interviewing Todd Kennedy (@BayouFilmProf) whose new book "Anthony Bourdain: Filmmaker" claims Bourdain was also a film auteur. Look at Hong Kong: he hired legendary DP Christopher Doyle (In the Mood for Love) & director Asia Argento (Dario's daughter) to shoot it. #auteur
