Just wanted to make this post as there are some cherry-picked Circana stats out there for North America.
70 million physical PlayStation 5 games were sold in FY2025, 22% of all PlayStation game sales. Many PS5 games are not released physically (i.e. indies, or games like Mixtape, Dispatch, and ARC Raiders), or have limited print runs (i.e. Pragmata and Resident Evil Requiem were famously difficult to get a hold of physically).
It can also be more difficult to get hold of new copies of older games. Steam have said that only 15% of total player time and revenue there are from games less than 12 months old; this too would have an impact on physical sales, as it would push many towards a digital copy where a physical one isn't available.
To get an idea of what 70 million physical game sales looked like compared to other consoles (i.e. to try and strip out the effect of counting the purchase of a $5 indie and $70 AAA game equally) I did a comparison versus PS1 to PS4 physical game sales for their sixth years on the market (to try and account for the bell curve of game sales).
That calculation of 70 million physical games comes to 34.5% (PS1), 31.11% (mainly PS2), 42.56% (mainly PS3) and 42% (PS4) of what was sold is terms of physical games for FY99, FY05, FY11 and FY18 respectively.
Some recent games, such as Astro Bot, sold better physically than digitally (at least in Europe). The physical vs digital game split very much depends on game type; single player games do far better in terms of physical sales. We didn't have that many big single-player story based PS5 games so far this year.
All of this would factor into PS5 physical game sales.

PS5 CAN NOW PLAY PS2 DISCS
Engadget reports a new homebrew emulator called PS5SX2 allows jailbroken PS5s to run PS2 discs directly.
• Built on PCSX2, it offers 4K upscaling, widescreen support, and 60fps patches.
• The PS5 cannot read CD-ROMs, so games like Rez and Tekken Tag Tournament are incompatible with direct disc play.

A singje game disc, when produced in bulk cost no more than $2 per disc, network scale estimates indicate that Sony spends roughly $150,000 to $400,000 per day strictly to host, maintain, and deliver the digital storefront and game download pipeline.

In 1997 CDs were the cheapest method of distributing games.
In 2026 its digital.
Multiply 3 disks time tens of millions of copies they need to print, plus the added cost of shipping.

🚨 SONY DATA BREACH UPDATE: 2.58 MILLION CUSTOMER RECORDS EXPOSED!
Yesterday, we covered the breach involving Sony's Japanese internet services. Now we have the confirmed numbers, and they're ugly.
Sony Network Communications says unauthorized access exposed 2,585,481 customer records from So-net and plala. That includes names, phone numbers, email addresses, user IDs, and dates of birth.
Worse, 54,401 email accounts had their passwords exposed, along with 16 bank account records. Sony says the affected email passwords were reset on October 27. No credit card information was included.
The intrusion happened October 19. Sony detected it October 23 and disclosed it October 27.
To be clear, this is NOT a confirmed PlayStation Network breach. It's Sony's internet-service operation in Japan. And the 2.58 million figure counts records, not necessarily unique people.
Still, that's an impressive amount of personal information to leave in somebody else's shopping cart. Apparently, the hackers found a clearance sale nobody authorized. 🙄
Affected customers should watch for phishing attempts and follow Sony's official account-security instructions.

Chciałem z całego serca podziękować @golpl, @RetroTata, @gram_pl, @cdaction, @lowcychin, @HazzadorGamin, @KacperLipski_X, @ZaklinaczLosiow, @archonik, @arktos0, @wulgarny_gracz, @borysniespielak, @deZeZed, @gromotapl, @HibHobXD, @SimMattically i wszystkim innym którzy pomogli mi nagłośnić te sprawe.

✅Partnership with indie publisher Retrovibe to help developers launch games on PC and consoles.
✅Covers funding, marketing, media/creator outreach, and console certification.
✅Their upcoming two games won’t be GOG exclusives and will also launch on Steam.
✅Their upcoming games are:
1️⃣Cop Bastard (releasing October 29)
2️⃣Project Warlock: Lost Chapters
Big move for a DRM-free digital storefront incentivizing more original games coming on their platforms.
DRM-free digital games that can be burned on disc should become normalized, because if you can’t keep it forever, then it’s not yours💿

@Sony paid only $5k to security researcher 0xbaas for finding the bug that allows a child account to be attached to customers plus accounts for fraud to be committed.
But paid out $50k for the Jailbreak hypervisor exploit. This tells us they care about their financial vulnerability but don't give a fuck about yours.
If you owned your digital purchases attached to your name instead of the EULA. The accounts could be deleted and purchases re-downloaded. But as they aren't. Well, fuck you. This is exactly why physical media matters. If your games are on the discs. It saves you a lot of money. But why would @PlayStation want that?

Sony has suffered a massive data breach affecting around 2.58 million So-net and plala customers.
Sony Network Communications says hackers accessed its member database on October 19. Leaked information includes:
• Names
• User IDs
• Email addresses
• Other customer information
• 16 bank account records, including account numbers and bank names
The company says it has not found any leaked credit card numbers or expiration dates, and it does not store customers’ bank PINs.
Sony says the affected servers have been shut down and the unauthorized connections blocked, while internet services continue to operate.
