Discover key findings from the 2022 update of the #OECD STRI.
Global services exports grew faster than services value added, GDP or merchandise exports over the last 20 years.
Our new @OECDtrade Policy Paper investigates the determinants of this phenomenon.
Joint work with Alex Jaax and @YotovG

Newly added data (2017-2018) show that the share of foreign value added in gross exports was rising before the COVID-19 pandemic in a number of major economies.
But also very clear that backward linkages in global value chains (#GVCs) were still below their peak levels.
Today the #OECD launched an update of the Inter-Country Input-Output (ICIO) and #Trade in #ValueAdded (TiVA) Databases.
The database now covers:
✔️all years from 1995-2018
✔️66 countries (up from 64)
✔️45 industries (up from 36).

Savings would be highest for business services with USD 42 billion. Substantial trade cost savings could also be realised in financial services with USD 33 billion, followed by transport (USD 28 billion), communications (USD 25 billion), and insurance (USD 15 billion). (15/?)
The total relief resulting from the cutback of regulatory cost in the #G20 could amount to annual savings of around USD 143 billion in five broad services sectors. That’s almost 30 bucks each year for each and every one of the 5 billion people in the G20. (14/?)
This could reduce services trade costs by -6% in the medium term. The impact would be particularly large in highly regulated sectors where licensing, registration processes and recognition of qualifications are prominent. (13/?)
Most barriers could be eliminated in sectors such as telecommunications services (-24%), computer services (-19%), engineering services (-18%) and commercial banking services (-17%), which are key intermediate services to a wide range of economic activities. (12/?)
