So first the good. The University of Toronto filled the protest area with police and campus security. They deserve full credit for that. Now the bad. The event never should have happened, but it did anyway. Past experience suggests that there will be no consequence for this grossly offensive protest on a day that was marked by mass rape, kidnapping, and slaughter of Jews in Israel. An institution of the University of Toronto's stature cannot allow a small minority of its faculty and student body to be targeted because of their religion or their country of origin. It goes against our fundamental understanding of human rights in Canada. An independent inquiry into antisemitism at the University of Toronto, to include investigating its modern manifestation as anti-Zionism, is long overdue. Be certain that this will be a topic of debate at the next Governing Council Meeting. @UofT

There are some interactions in medicine that have haunted me for years. A look on a patient's face who realizes the gravity of their situation, or grief in the eyes of a parent who cannot help their child. It stays with you. When I sat through 45 excruciating minutes of murder and mutilation recorded by the body cameras of Hamas terrorists on October 7th, I collected more core memories of overwhelming tragedy. We as a society cannot let this day be hijacked by those who wish to glorify this horror. The government must say NO! The universities must say NO! The high schools must say NO! Sadly, the grade schools must say NO! But most importantly, we all as individuals must say NO! @UofT

Three years after October 7th, the initial shock has become a relentless series of shockwaves. Israelis and diaspora Jews have since shared many of the same experiences, dominated by denial, repeated antisemitic violence, and a deep sense of betrayal. michaelgeist.ca/2026/10/thre…

Since this tweet has attracted considerable commentary, I know the Song Shul services were held at the Meridian Arts Centre. It is not uncommon to hold services during high holidays in similar locations (I attended one this year). @NEWSneil did not describe it as a synagogue, he wrote synagogue services. If this had been a full-time synagogue, some of the protesters' conduct would be criminal under the newly enacted Bill C-9. As for Mark Regev as the guest speaker during services, the tweet's description of him is not dissimilar from his Wikipedia entry. Simply put, I don't see anything inaccurate or deceptive in the tweet thread, and the CBC’s decision to jump to disciplinary action cannot be justified by its content. xitter.cf/mgeist/status/21033049…
I don’t understand why this CBC journalist is facing disciplinary action. He describes facing threats while attending a synagogue service and provides context with rise of antisemitism, terror attack and guest speaker. Thread is accurate. What’s the issue? xitter.cf/NEWSneil/status/210220…

Kiva survived the Holocaust and rebuilt his life in Toronto on the promise that a Jewish name on a storefront was just a name. He sold the bakery years ago. The attackers knew none of that. When antisemitism is normalized, the name on the window is enough. michaelgeist.ca/2026/07/the-…

πŸ“’ I was alarmed by the lies @SMohyeddin told to @kthalps' audience. Katie invited me on her show to respond. But she chose to not run my interview. I think her 456,000 subscribers deserve to know that they were badly misled, and what the truth is.

Replying to @BermanPCMD @NDP
That @DonDavies is so willing to embrace things that are at most only partially supported by facts and at worst completely untrue is reflective of a deeply problematic situation. We’ve seen what happens when politicians choose populist narratives over facts. It’s called MAGA.

Dear Canadian doctors, We have an antisemitism problem. When physicians, who also have university faculty positions, refer to their Jewish colleagues as 'zios' on doctor chat groups, it's time to have a serious discussion about civility, professionalism, and hate speech. This bigotry has become normalized in online physician chat groups and the lack of response by regulatory bodies has only emboldened this type of behavior. It has not yet spilled into the clinical world, but it creates a poisoned environment where, eventually, there is a risk that it will. There need to be clear guidelines and guardrails to walk back some of this atrocious behavior and bring civility back to the profession.

Montreal bagels are simply the best!
Montreal bagel at @fairmountbagel πŸ“Montreal, Canada πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦ Explore Canada: tasteatlas.com/canada The Montreal bagel is a dense, imperfect ring of dough. Eastern European Jewish immigrants brought the recipe to Canada in the early 1900s, and the bakeries that opened back then still use the exact same manual method today. The dough is rolled by hand into an uneven circle with a wide hole, leaving no room for a thick, fluffy center. Bakers drop the raw dough into a rolling boil of honey-sweetened water. This step locks in a distinct sweetness and turns the exterior into a sticky trap for seeds. Once coated entirely in sesame or poppy, the bagels are lined up on long, narrow wooden boards and shoved straight into a glowing wood-fired oven. The bakers constantly feed the fire and shuffle the boards, working fast in the intense heat. They emerge blistered and smelling of wood smoke. The honey-water bath creates a hard crust, while the open flames char the outer layer of seeds. Underneath that crunch, the dough is tight, heavy, and chewy. Bakeries like Fairmount operate 24 hours a day, pulling fresh batches from the ashes constantly. Locals grab them hot in a brown paper bag to eat plain right on the street, or slice them open to hold a heavy smear of cream cheese and thick cuts of cured salmon.
