I had just one roll of fast film. That night by the fire, using flash was out of the question—not just for aesthetics. I loaded my cheap Nikon F50 with Ilford Delta 3200 ISO, pushed to 12800 ISO, and hoped to capture something in the pitch-black night.
Weeks later, we met at a reporter’s house, and all I can say is he’s an incredible human being.

They were cheerful and relaxed, seemingly oblivious to me and the camera.
While I remembered that night vividly, my hopes for the photos were slim. Months later, when I finally developed the film, faint traces appeared—some were even promising.
