SIR PATRICK STEWART (1940-2026) Before everything else, Patrick was defined by being born and bred in Yorkshire, the proud county in the north of England which he loved to the end. You could hear it in his accented voice and in the stern honesty with which he told you what he thought and felt. Yorkshiremen have no truck with half-truths or avoidance of big issues. He wore his heart on his sleeve, which made him a man to rely on, to admire and in my case, love. We first met as ambitious young actors with the Royal Shakespeare Company half a century ago but we werenโ€™t in the same productions. My first strong memory was a few years later, meeting him in the street in central London when he told me about an offer to take over a leading part in 'Star Trek'. โ€œBut Patrick think of your stage career in the UK. Do you really want to riskโ€”getting lost in Hollywood for years and years?โ€. Well, he took the risk and thank goodness for us all that he did for not just his devoted Trekkies but film and theatre audiences, who marvelled at his using international celebrity to star in a string of cinema successes ('X-Men' of course) and in great classical plays by Shakespeare, Ibsen, Arthur Miller, Peter Shaffer, Pinter and Beckett at Stratford-upon-Avon, in Londonโ€™s West End and on Broadway. America was his adopted home, where he met his adored Sunny who has cared for him through sickness and health, through thick and thin. But he never forsook his origins: and the proudest achievement of the most respected and beloved actor of his generation on either side of the Atlantic, was his appointment as Chancellor of Huddersfield University in Yorkshire. His farewell performance in 'Avengers: Doomsday' is yet to be seen. Ian McKellen 29 October 2026 Photo: University of Huddersfield

Rest in peace, Margaret Hamilton (1936โ€“2026). Humanity walked on the Moon because extraordinary minds like hers made the impossible possible. In an era when women were routinely erased from history's achievements and forced to the sidelines by male scientists, she led the team that developed Apolloโ€™s flight software, saved humanityโ€™s first Moon landing, and revolutionised software engineering. The world has lost a scientist, pioneer, and one of the best of us. Humanity will carry her legacy to the stars and beyond. theguardian.com/science/2026โ€ฆ

Worrying that the PM is coming out with stuff like this 24 hours after they've just been found guilty of 17 years of cheating. Another tone deaf response from a politician who should stick to politics
The UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham has said he would be โ€œreally concernedโ€ to lose Manchester Cityโ€™s Emirati owners from the Premier League. โ€œTheyโ€™ve been such a huge partner in the building of modern Manchester and obviously the building of Manchester City into the global force that it is.โ€ More from @AdamCrafton_ โฌ‡๏ธ bit.ly/4dN8yG9

The fruits of their cheating was a more valuable squad. They can recycle those illicit funds by selling players and buying new ones. Which means until that wrongful sporting advantage is mitigated, they have never stopped cheating. Are they doing other things to actively cheat still? Iโ€™d be amazed if they werenโ€™t.

Sent to me by a follower. Today, in Southport, a man with knives is arrested by armed police after threatening to 'blow up the town'. Remember, the police had numerous interactions with Valdo Calocane, but he was always released and went on to kill three people.

Correct, they could have pulled over when required to do so by by the police. There would have been no 'chase'. Everybody goes home.

Perhaps, & hear me out Jacobโ€™s family; if Jacob & his bunch of half-wits hadnโ€™t been out driving at night, at high speed up the wrong side of a dual carriageway, probably wearing balaclavas, with the car lights off, two policemanโ€™s families would not be mourning their loss today?
