Deniers say cell culture manufactures virus particles. Viruses replicate only inside living cells, so demanding one without cells demands a non-virus. We also have photographs of Ebola in the livers of people who died of it, taken with no dish involved. My latest Substack: ameshadalja.substack.com/p/t…

Biosecurity at Latch is cracked!
AI will become core infrastructure for detecting and tracking respiratory outbreaks.
Today we’re introducing RespSurvBench: 110 evaluations spanning diagnostic assays, pathogen discovery, viral evolution and transmission, and population surveillance.
Across 21 models + 34 model–harness configurations, the highest pass rate was 25.5%, from Claude Opus 5.5 in Pi. Refusals and execution errors count as failures.
Our initial analysis points to familiar scientific mistakes: treating missing observations as negative results, mismatching records, and confusing measurement artifacts with true biological signal.
This benchmark was an especially large effort from many talented scientists.

Today, we released the National Policy for Nucleic Acid Synthesis Screening to protect American biotechnology innovation while reducing the risk of misuse.
This policy establishes a new, government-wide screening requirements for synthetic DNA and the equipment used to make it. It will ensure companies selling nucleic acid sequences and synthesis equipment know their customers and prevent the malicious use of these materials and tools.
This policy strengthens our Nation’s biosecurity posture by establishing rigorous U.S. government-wide procurement screening and physical security standards for synthetic biology. It replaces outdated “self-attestation” systems with robust, independent verification. It creates a dynamic, SI-powered screening layer that assesses the biological risk from nucleic acid sequences, allowing the U.S. to anticipate and prevent malicious use and help stop dangerous gain-of-function research.
@NIST will issue rigorous new screening standards and @HHSGov and @USDA will certify synthetic biology providers. Together, these measures will strengthen American biosecurity, safeguard responsible innovation, and establish a global standard for safe and transparent synthetic biology tools and research.

This is an outstanding summary of exactly where we are with H5N1, how the US has fumbled dealing with it, and the ongoing and increasing risk of reassortment leading to a new human influenza pandemic.
As I always say, we are giving this beast of a virus too much room.

As AI and biotechnology advance, biosecurity must evolve too.
Experts at the #globalbiosecurityconference underlined the need for multilayered safeguards, stronger screening mechanisms and intersectoral collaboration to detect and prevent misuse by malicious actors.

Very welcome news: WHO’s Technical Advisory Group on Candidate Vaccines Prioritisation has recommended that two CEPI-funded vaccine candidates be evaluated in the Tumaini Phase 2/3 clinical trial in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. This takes us a step closer to safe and effective Bundibugyo-specific vaccines that could help save lives, bring the current outbreak under control and strengthen preparedness for the future.
Thanks to the commitment of our partners at the @UniofOxford, @SerumInstIndia and @moderna_tx, these promising candidates have progressed from concept to clinical trials at pace. CEPI is working closely with the developers, Tumaini trial partners and national authorities to get these vaccines into Tumaini as quickly as possible.

The FDA cleared a 15-minute blood test that reads the immune response to separate bacterial from viral infection. It runs on analyzers labs already own, and that scale is the real news. My perspective is in Healio's piece. healio.com/news/infectious-d…

Excited to welcome Rob Whitehurst to Pilgrim to help lead our government operations!
Rob has spent nearly 30 years confronting biological and explosive threats, including 14 years at DHS, where he coordinated biodefense operations for the World Cup after leading a 1,200-person COVID screening operation across 15 international airports and along the Southwest border.
Prior to DHS, Rob served 13 years in the Army and Air Force, conducting 250+ combat missions and neutralizing over 300 explosive threats, including IEDs and insurgent bomb-making labs.
Few people have his experience deploying biodefense capabilities at a national scale. Having known Rob for nearly two years, we're glad to have him aboard as we build the nation's biodefense infrastructure.

“Scenario C: A very large, sustained outbreak with high-intensity transmission in multiple areas of DRC, with the rate of new cases continuing to increase. In this scenario, multiple densely populated areas within the DRC experience a high intensity of transmission, with potential to establish in other countries. The geographic footprint of the outbreak would likely expand, with transmission occurring in an increasing number of health zones within DRC. Importation and spread in neighboring countries are more likely in this scenario compared to Scenarios A and B.” cdc.gov/cfa-qualitative-asse…

We asked GPT-6 Astra to edit Qwen3.5-0.8B weights to improve math.
It directly changed only 0.016% of weights, fixing 0.8B's reasoning loops & improving math up to 6x and even instruction following 3x, without gradients or training.
We call this Weight-Space Programming: frontier LLMs can now natively read/write neural network weights! 🧵
Blog: rikiyat.github.io/blog/weigh…
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
LLM was given weights explicitly as text in prompt and used code/forward passes (per authors' logs) to ablate Qwen looping direction, a known thinking-mode issue per model card. Primarily fixed repetition in that mode, not general 'natively' improving weights/math.

Much of my work focuses on supporting the development of new vaccines, which (obviously!) matters enormously. But there’s a lot of impact left on the table with vaccines we already have.
Important details (dose, schedule, and patient eligibility) are often set during development, and there’s little commercial incentive to revisit them later. Yet the payoff can be huge. For example, the switch to single-dose HPV schedules means a more cost-effective vaccine, and the same vaccine supply protects far more people.
So @coeff_giving is launching a $30 million call for work that gets more out of licensed and late-stage vaccines, primarily in low- and middle-income countries. Ideas don’t need to be fully formed.
