Yesterday, a BioRTC delegation led by our Director, Professor Mahmoud Bukar Maina, visited the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH) at the invitation of its Acting Chief Medical Director to discuss opportunities for institutional collaboration.
The meeting was very productive, with several areas of potential collaboration identified, including joint research through the UMTH Neuroscience and Stroke Centre, capacity building, scientific training, and joint applications for competitive research grants.
Over 200 km 4 a day of science at BioRTC
We welcomed 80 #Anatomy students & 3 lecturers from Sa’adu Zungur University, Gadau, Bauchi.
Their journey speaks to an important part of why BioRTC exists: to make research infrastructure, expertise & training accessible in our region

They were also introduced to genomics, tissue culture, proteomics, Drosophila research and open science.
For many, it was their first opportunity to encounter technologies they had previously learned about mainly through lectures and textbooks.

Retinal Imaging Comes to the SAHEL Study
A Topcon Maestro2 optical coherence tomography (OCT) retinal imaging system has arrived @BioRTCNig.
This will allow us to investigate relationships between the eye, brain ageing and dementia in our SAHEL cohort of 1,100+ participants.
This happened via a new collaboration with Prof. Cecilia Lee and Prof. @TaYoshimatsu @WashU that will bring their expertise in vision to the SAHEL Study.
Finally, Kaosarat Ganiyu from the @mahmoudbukar lab presented her work, on “Defining Tau Species associated with Nucleolar Dysfunction and Nuclear Stress Responses in Models of 4R Tauopathy.” @NSNSecretariat.
Kaosarat's research is supported by @CurePSP. We are grateful for their support of this work. 🧠🔬
At the ongoing @NSNSecretariat conference, Amina Umar Faruk from @mahmoudbukar lab presented her work on integrating gut microbiota, #APOE genotype, environmental exposures and dietary patterns to investigate cognitive decline in an ancestrally diverse Sahelian population. 🧠🦠🧬
Excellent talk by Alameen Mukhtar from the @mahmoudbukar Lab at the ongoing @NSNSecretariat conference.
Alameen presented his work investigating how dityrosine oxidation affects the aggregation, seeding competence and propagation of #tau.
Brilliant talk by Mubarak Ismail from the @mahmoudbukar Lab at @NSNSecretariat conference! 👏🏾
He presented his work using label-free quantitative phase imaging to reveal tau-associated alterations in nuclear structure in live cells. Thanks to @YorkBioimaging for support
Next, Dr @alkhamis3322 presented his work on the generation of #iPSC lines from an #African centenarian, contributing to efforts to increase African representation in human cellular models of ageing and disease. @NSNSecretariat
Members of the @mahmoudbukar Lab are at the @NSNSecretariat Annual Conference. 5 members of the lab will be giving oral presentations, while others will be presenting posters. The day kicked off with a talk by Dr Suleiman Kwairanga on “Decoding the APOE Paradox in #Alzheimer’s.
Congratulations to @usman_dawoud, who today received an Award of Recognition from the Nigerian Army for his contribution to its Maiden Biosafety & Biosecurity Training in the North East. Our appreciation to Lt Col I.F. Sawa and the Nigerian Army for the recognition.
