At Avian Conservation Uganda, we don’t just talk about bird conservation — we act when birds need us most.
At Lake Opeta, what began as a mission to rescue one stranded Shoebill chick unexpectedly led us to another mature Shoebill that had reportedly been kept in captivity for over five months. We went for one. We returned having rescued two.
Limited resources, difficult logistics and other challenges may test us, but they will never weaken our commitment to Uganda’s birds.
When a bird needs saving, we will do everything within our capacity to answer the call.

#ThrowbackThursday to 10 May, when we commemorated World Migratory Bird Day at Lutembe Bay—one of Uganda’s most important habitats for migratory and resident bird species.
The day began with an immersive birdwatching excursion across the waters of Lutembe Bay, giving participants a rare opportunity to experience the beauty of birds in their natural habitat and learn about the remarkable journeys migratory species undertake across borders and continents.
Beyond birdwatching, the activity placed community engagement at the heart of conservation. We interacted with residents living around the wetland, highlighting the vital role they play in protecting birds, preserving habitats and safeguarding the ecosystems that support both wildlife and human livelihoods.
Students from the School of Ornithology also participated as part of their practical field studies, transforming the experience into a meaningful blend of education, research and community action.
This was more than a day in the field. It was a powerful reminder that the survival of migratory birds depends on healthy wetlands, informed communities and committed conservationists working together.
At Avian Conservation Uganda, we remain dedicated to protecting birds, strengthening conservation awareness and inspiring more people to become responsible custodians of nature.
