The guy who kept Shaq and Charles Barkley in line on TV for 37 years used to spend his mornings shaving and dressing his son, who could barely move and breathed through a ventilator. Then he'd go to work and laugh with those guys all night like nothing was going on.
Tonight Ernie Johnson said this season will be his last, and Barkley tried to thank him on air and couldn't get the words out.
I don't think most people watching that clip know what Ernie was carrying all those years.
He and his wife Cheryl adopted Michael from an orphanage outside Bucharest in 1991, when he was 3. He had Duchenne muscular dystrophy, and doctors didn't think he'd make it to his 20s. He lived to 33. When Ernie was home, getting Michael ready in the morning could take an hour and a half, and Ernie did the showering and shaving and dressing himself.
In 2006 he told viewers he had non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, and by the end of October he was back at the desk while he was still going through chemo.
When Michael died in 2021, Ernie wasn't on the show that week, and Shaq, Kenny and Chuck spent about six minutes trying to hold it together while they talked about a kid most of America never met.
Then last year he had heart bypass surgery, and this summer he turned 70.
Ernie's dad pitched in the big leagues and then called Braves games for decades, and he gave his son a rule Ernie's talked about forever: if somebody spikes you at second base, never rub.
If you've ever wondered why nobody's been able to copy Inside, that rule is a big part of it. Barkley could say the dumbest thing imaginable, Shaq could fall out of his chair, Kenny could go running to the big board, and Ernie would just pick it up and bring it back to basketball with that yellow legal pad. Those three got to be chaos because the guy in the middle never made his own stuff the show.
He still calls hosting a "get-to job," and he was calling it that the same year he buried his son.
So when Charles Barkley, who's roasted pretty much everybody alive on live TV, can't finish a sentence to the man, that's why.
Charles Barkley and the guys give Ernie Johnson his flowers. This is a must watch.

Amy Adams Strunk, Burke Nihill and all the rest, I hope you realize what a joke you’ve made this franchise on your watch. What a waste of a beautiful fall day the Titans are. @TwoRiversFord recap.
Aaron Rodgers says the “MAGA movement” has become “Israel-First.”
Rodgers has experimented with psychedelic mushrooms, in line with his support for “MAHA,” and has become outspoken since COVID.
He quotes George Carlin and says, “If voting mattered,” people wouldn’t be allowed to vote.

For as great of a move as it was for MSU to move up to the MVC, the decision to elevate football to the MVFC will haunt the program for years to come. This is sad.
In the same way that the NCAA looked the other way at paying players for years, the NBA knows it can’t punish the Clippers without punishing all of its teams for doing the same thing.
Professional sports are merely an entertainment product.
NEWS with @DVNJr, @ramonashelburne and @ShamsCharania: The NBA has found no evidence showing LA Clippers owner Steve Ballmer funneled money through team sponsors to pay Kawhi Leonard in order to circumvent the salary cap, sources tell ESPN. espn.com/nba/story/_/id/4963…

The NBA has fined Steve Ballmer $30 million, and has stripped the Clippers of five first round picks due to this investigation. nytimes.com/athletic/75138…

This image was sent to me from the field. These are messages US servicemen in the Persian Gulf have scribbled on the dust of an aircraft flap.
"Be a good guy and do what Israel tells you to"
"Operation Epstein Fury"
"Peace deal #64 incoming... ALL THIS FOR THE HOLY LAND"
I have no frame of reference, I can't compare it to the sentiments of US soldiers in previous conflicts. But I suspect these are new sentiments, or at least a new willingness to express them this openly and directly.
But as one serviceman told me: "What people in the media don't understand when they compare past conflicts to this one, is this operation has no morale behind it. That makes a world of difference to service members deployed to undesirable locations indefinitely."
Read that last part again: No morale. Deployed to undesirable locations INDEFINITELY.
My own conclusion: When a war has no morale behind it, winning means that you simply end it. There is no other "winning" in such an unjust war.

There are zero Flock cameras in Manhattan’s wealthiest neighborhood
Flock cameras for thee but not for me? I guess the rich don't want to be monitored like common criminals by their government.
Are you mad yet?!

Not to change the subject from burritos but when I was earning poverty wages in my 20s I used to go to Subway nearly every day and get a footlong Italian sub for 5 dollars. It was generally the only big meal I would eat in a day.
If I was hungry later at night, I could always swing by McDonald’s and grab a chicken sandwich for a dollar.
All of these people are screaming about “eating at home” but I basically never made meals at home in those days and I was able to get by. You used to be able to survive on low wages without making meals from scratch. If that’s not possible anymore then it’s a sign that our standard of living is declining. That’s a problem. You should care about that.
Anyway, I went to a Subway recently and that same sandwich was 13 dollars. McDonald’s, of course, doesn’t sell anything for a dollar anymore.

Congress is not serious.
We are voting on a stock trading ban for members of Congress…
BUT Republicans added voter-ID in the legislation.
Not to get Dems to vote for voter-ID,
but to get them to vote against the stock trading ban, so they can use it in the Nov. election.
