Ryan Key wrote the lyrics to “Only One” about a very strange real-life breakup: he ended the relationship even though his girlfriend hadn’t done anything wrong, he simply needed space to figure life out. Released as the third single from Yellowcard’s album Ocean Avenue, it reached No. 15 on Billboard’s Modern Rock Tracks chart, No. 28 on Mainstream Top 40 and No. 22 on the Bubbling Under Hot 100, later going gold in the US.
The song’s main riff was discovered by accident while the band was testing something else in the studio. They then built the track piece by piece, something they rarely did. The radio edit also shortened the song by removing Sean Mackin’s violin solo in the bridge.

“The Bitter End” was written and recorded in just two days at the very end of the sessions for Placebo’s 2003 album Sleeping with Ghosts. After spending a lot of time working with technology and synthesizers, the band wanted something more rootsy and punk-like.
Released as the album’s lead single in March 2003, it reached No. 12 on the UK Singles Chart. The song contains several references to George Orwell’s 1984, including the date 2 May (the day Winston and Julia spend their first night together). The music video was partly filmed at the Lovell Telescope at Jodrell Bank Observatory in Cheshire.
