BlockNews Weekly Market Wrap: Oil Hits $116, Gold Loses $4,000, AI CapEx Repriced | Oct 19-23
A sharp narrative shift this week: US markets rallied early on AI earnings, but Meta's massive CapEx spooked investors on Thursday. Coupled with Middle East tensions pushing Brent toward $116 and reigniting inflation fears, capital rotated out of tech and into energy and consumer staples.
📉 Weekly Asset Performance
· US Stocks: Nasdaq -2.60% (worst week since June); Dow +0.41% (3rd straight weekly gain). On Friday, the Dow plunged 653 points; Meta dropped 7% for the week; Nvidia fell 5% Friday. The chip rebound on Friday lacked broader market support.
· A-shares & HK Stocks: A-shares saw a dramatic "V-shaped" reversal on Friday. ChiNext surged 4.16% but ended the week -3.18%. Total A-share turnover hit ¥1.97 trillion. HK stocks lagged: Hang Seng -5.18% weekly, Hang Seng Tech -7.65%, meeting resistance below 3,900.
· Commodities: Crude oil was the clear winner. Brent closed at $116.72 (+3.14% weekly), WTI at $103.27. Spot gold plunged 4.07%, losing the $4,000 mark to close at $3,996. As the chart notes: "Money went to oil, not gold."
· Crypto: Bitcoin tracked US equities closely. It hit a high of $84,900 mid-week before falling back to ~$81,000 on Thursday's Nasdaq selloff. It’s currently around $80,950, with most of the weekly gains given back.
👀 What to Watch Next Week
1. Can A-shares sustain Friday's V-shaped reversal? Is the ChiNext low of 2,494 a bottom?
2. Can Hang Seng Tech stabilize and break the 3,900 resistance?
3. Will the Friday bounce in US chip stocks hold up? Plus, the impact of high oil on consumer spending.
4. The battle for the $4,000 gold line, and inflation risks from elevated Brent crude.

BlockNews Market Brief: AI Earnings vs. Middle East Tensions — Oil Tops $110, Risk Appetite Shifts | Oct 22
Today's global market narrative is driven by two intertwined factors: whether AI earnings can justify massive CapEx, and rising Middle East tensions pushing oil back to $110, reigniting inflation and rate-hike fears. Market risk appetite is undergoing a sharp pivot.
📈 US Markets (Wednesday Close): AI Chain Leads
US stocks closed higher. Dow +0.69% to 52,856; S&P 500 +0.58% to 7,757; Nasdaq +1.05% to 26,703. The rally was concentrated in AI: SpaceX +7.8%, Super Micro +9.6%, Nvidia +2.5%.
⚠️ Today's Session: Asia Under Pressure
Risk appetite slumped on Thursday. Per Reuters/Bloomberg, US futures fell (S&P 500 futures -0.5% to -0.9%, Nasdaq -1.1% to -1.6%). Asia markets took a hit: KOSPI fell over 4%, Hang Seng dropped ~3%, and CSI 300 fell ~2%, nearing a technical bear market. Indian markets also opened weaker.
🛢️ The Core Catalyst: Brent Crude at $110
Oil is the direct driver. Brent crude returned to ~$110, a five-month high. After Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia, the US evacuated some diplomatic staff. The New York Times reports the US and Israel have a concrete plan to strike Iran after the midterms (Nov 3). Meanwhile, Gulf producers' exports are back to pre-war levels, while Iran's shadow fleet oil inventory is reportedly running dry.
Markets are repricing the risk of "oil-driven inflation rebound and rising rates." Expect heightened volatility as asset pricing logic resets.

BlockNews Evening Brief: CATL Plunge Drags Markets, Brent Crude Tops $110 | Oct 21
📉 Macro & Stocks
The US 10-year Treasury yield ticked up to 5.12%, while markets still price in an 85% chance of a 25bps Fed rate cut in October. The US Dollar Index fell 0.26% overnight to 101.71.
· US Markets: Major indices closed higher Tuesday. Dow +1.02%, S&P 500 +0.28%, Nasdaq -0.02%. SpaceX surged over 8% after hours on a 161% YoY jump in Q3 revenue to $14.58B. Netflix fell ~4.6% after hours despite beating profit estimates due to weak guidance.
· A-shares / HK: A-shares tumbled after a higher open. Shanghai Composite -0.60% at 3,713; ChiNext plunged 1.62%. Hang Seng -0.90%, with Hang Seng Tech losing the 4,000 mark. CATL dragged the entire battery chain down: A-shares fell nearly 12% (heavy turnover of ¥32.4B), while HK shares plunged 11.41% to a 52-week low after Morgan Stanley downgraded the stock amid slowing profit growth.
🛢️ Commodities
· Crude Oil: Geopolitical premiums spiked again. A tanker hitting a mine in the Strait of Hormuz and rising Middle East tensions pushed Brent +1.42% to $110.34, while WTI +1.75%, nearing the $100 mark.
· Precious Metals: Gold -0.18% at $4,118; Silver -1.29% at $57.26.
🪙 Crypto
Bitcoin briefly spiked to $83K in the afternoon but failed to hold, falling back to around $82.6K (+1% in 24h). ETF inflows shrank sharply: BTC ETFs saw $527M net inflow Monday (mostly IBIT), but only $23M on Tuesday.
👀 What to Watch Tonight
1. Can SpaceX hold its after-hours rally when US markets open?
2. Earnings after the bell: Meta, Texas Instruments, and Lam Research.
3. CATL's next move—will the battery chain see any recovery?
4. Key Levels: Can Brent hold above $110? Can Bitcoin break through the $83,200 resistance?
Note: Data as of the evening of Oct 21 (Beijing Time). Not investment advice.
