theguardian.com/politics/202… Opening a debate on links with the EU is a good thing to do Free movement is a key issue and it is right to address it I fear that - like the referendum debate - this new debate will be confined to EU trade, rather than EU as a federal union in the making.

Burnham's talk of a return to free movement and joining the single market or the EU is likely to produce its maximum political returns before the nitty gritty of trade-offs and financial contributions to the EU kick in. This makes me think a general election next year is likely.

Burnham: freedom of movement not a red line, but “I can’t see myself ever recommending anything that would involve joining the euro.." Hard to imagine the UK joining the EU without a euro commitment Hint at single market not EU? No referendum needed for single market, says B.
🔺 EXCLUSIVE: Andy Burnham has opened the door to Britain readopting the European Union’s free movement rules, arguing that an “honest discussion” is needed, reports @benrileysmith thetimes.com/uk/politics/art…

The most important thing today is that Starlink and Starshield operations have been restored to the speeds we had before the restrictions. The speeds are now where they need to be. The restoration began overnight, and by this morning, speeds were already sufficient. This matters: for our frontline logistics, for defending Ukraine against jet-powered “shaheds.” I thank all Americans and all our partners who took this seriously and truly helped – members of Congress, senators, all the media, the State Department, and the President. Protecting lives matters.

The UK's ban on trade with Israeli settlements, announced in September 2026, is grounded in international law, and has the stated aim of upholding the international commitment to a two-state solution. Chatham House's latest policy paper sets out targeted steps that the UK, with like-minded partners, can take to safeguard the viability of a sovereign Palestinian state alongside a secure Israel. Replying to @carlbildt
@carlbildt spot-on here. Europe (EU + UK) has GDP roughly 10 times Russia's. Putin's aggression is an existential threat to democratic Europe . Leaders should say honestly to voters that helping Ukraine & boosting defence means sacrificing other desirable spending
Europe faces a major challenge financially supporting 🇺🇦 with the unrelenting 🇷🇺 attacks taking a heavier toll on the economy of the country. It’s big numbers, but in reality the 0.2% or so should be perfectly possible within the 5% of GDP already committed for defence. It’s a question of political will.

Trump and Witkoff are writing some of the darkest pages of American history, in which an American President backed Russia in its aggression and war crimes against Ukraine, while casually offering to sell US arms to China.
Steve Witkoff, the United States’ special envoy, praised Russian ruler Vladimir Putin during face-to-face talks in St. Petersburg, calling him “a humanitarian.” vist.ly/5pbga

Trump says Russian treatment of Ukraine is fine, and that Russia hasn't been doing much to Ukraine. Words fail me.
⚡️️What Russia's doing to Ukraine is 'fine,' Trump says. "Russia, frankly, has been fine on Ukraine. They haven't been doing much," Trump said, hours after a Russian drone strike in a public park killed six people, including two children. kyivindependent.com/what-rus…

rusi.org/explore-our-researc… It is time for Ukraine's allies to pitch an off-ramp to Putin’s potential successors, offering a reset in relations with a new regime making a clean break with the leaders who executed the Ukraine war, and ready to make a just peace with Ukraine.

UK welfare focuses on cash rather than getting people into work It pays for for disability, rather than helping people manage it Today’s jobless problem could be an undiscovered N Sea oilfield: an asset for the economy, communities, + the country Outstanding by @FraserNelson
In The Times welfare project, a few findings - when they emerged - took my breath away. This graph showing surge in Britain’s “deaths of despair” (due to drugs, suicide, alcohol) is one. Plunging in Europe. Soaring here. Why? Www.times-comment.com/despai…

In this blog I pan Trump for rewarding Putin's aggression. Some predict regime change in Moscow, and I urge Europe to offer a new deal for Russia if a new leadership delivers a just peace to Ukraine, respects Ukraine's sovereignty, and contributes to Ukraine's reconstruction.
In the latest #RUSICommentary, Professor Derrick Wyatt KC argues that Europe should start “talking over Putin’s head” to his potential successors, offering a political and economic reset in return for a just peace for Ukraine. rusi.org/explore-our-researc…
