π₯ MAYDAY! IS YOUR COMMAND TEAM READY?
When a firefighter transmits a Mayday, the incident commander must manage two critical priorities: rescuing the firefighter in trouble AND maintaining the fire control operations necessary to stabilize the incident.
But successful Mayday management starts long before the Mayday is transmitted.

This two-day workshop examines real-world Mayday events, lessons learned from firefighter line-of-duty deaths, Mayday research, and the practical application of the Blue Card Incident Command System.
We'll focus on both preventing Maydays through effective command and strategic decision-making and managing the incident when something goes wrong.
As Alan Brunacini reminded us, "You must be doing everything right before something goes wrong."
Don't wait for a Mayday to find out if your command system is ready.

π 40+ YEARS OF FIRE COMMAND. THE FOUNDATION OF BLUE CARD.
For more than 40 years, the principles of Alan Brunaciniβs Fire Command have provided firefighters and incident commanders with a systematic approach to managing emergency incidents.
Today, those same principles serve as the foundation of the Blue Card Incident Command System.
At the heart of that system are the Eight Functions of Command:
1. Deployment β Getting the right resources to the right place.
2. Assume, Confirm & Position Command β Establishing command and maintaining a clear command presence.
3. Situation Evaluation β Understanding what's happening, what's changing, and what comes next.
4. Strategy & Incident Action Planning β Developing and communicating a plan based on conditions and risk.
5. Communications β Keeping information clear, concise, and consistent.
6. Organization β Building an incident organization that matches the size and complexity of the event.
7. Review, Evaluate & Revise β Continuously assessing conditions and adjusting the plan.
8. Continue, Support & Terminate Command β Supporting ongoing operations and bringing the incident to a safe, organized conclusion.
These aren't just eight items to memorize. They are the foundation of a repeatable, trainable, and measurable system for managing the hazard zone.
The fireground has changed over the past 40 years. Our buildings, tactics, equipment, and understanding of fire behavior have evolved. But the need for strong, disciplined incident command has never changed.

WHAT ARE WE PASSING ON?
Today's firefighters are smarter, better trained, and more knowledgeable than ever. But there's one thing experience provides that can't be learned in a classroom: perspective.
As experienced firefighters and officers, we have a responsibility to pass along more than skills. We must explain the "WHY" behind what we do, reinforce risk management, and have the courage to say "NO" when the risk outweighs the reward.
Leadership isn't about being liked. It's about doing what's rightβeven when it's unpopular.
The next generation isn't the problem. They have incredible potential. Our job is to give them the perspective to make even better decisions than we did.

π₯ SMOKE SHOWING. WHAT IS THE FIRE TELLING YOU?
π NEW B SHIFTER 10-MINUTE TRAINING!
In Ed Hartinβs October 10-Minute Training, we head to Brick Township, New Jersey, where crews arrive at a residential fire with smoke showing from an open front door.
Is this an early growth-stage fire or a ventilation-limited fire in decay? The answer matters, and the decisions made by IC No. 1 can set the tone for the entire incident.
This month's drill challenges you to read the fire, identify critical factors, and make sound initial strategic decisions using actual incident video.
Take 10 minutes to sharpen your fire-reading and size-up skills!

π₯ BIG BOX WORKSHOP IN PHOENIX! π
We're kicking off a two-day Blue Card Big Box Workshop today at the Alan V. Brunacini Command Training Center in Phoenix, Arizona!
We're excited to have Shane Ray, President of the National Fire Sprinkler Association (NFSA), joining us as we take a deep dive into the unique challenges of managing fires in large commercial buildings, warehouses, and distribution centers.
Not long ago, a 150,000-square-foot big box store was considered enormous. Today, fulfillment centers and warehouses routinely exceed 1 MILLION square feet!
These buildings are different. Their fire protection systems, life safety profiles, critical factors, and tactical considerations demand a different approach to incident command.
Over the next two days, we'll focus on:
π Understanding fire sprinkler and protection systems
π Identifying Big Box critical factors
π Strategic decision-making and risk management
π Division/Sector operations and tactical supervision
π Applying what we've learned through realistic Big Box command simulations
The goal isn't simply to fight a bigger fire. It's to understand the building, work with its fire protection systems, and make better strategic and tactical decisions.
A big thank you to Shane Ray and the NFSA for their continued partnership and commitment to firefighter safety and education!

ποΈ BEST OF B SHIFTER PODCAST: BLUE CARD EXPLAINED
What is Blue Card, why was it developed, and what problem is it designed to solve?
We're going back into the B Shifter archives for a conversation originally published on November 2, 2021, featuring Nick Brunacini, Josh Blum, and John Vance.
In this episode, we get back to the roots of Blue Card, including the lessons learned from the Southwest Supermarket fire and the line-of-duty death of Phoenix Firefighter Brett Tarver.
We also tackle some of the common misconceptions about Blue Card and explain why it's much more than a certification program. It's a complete system for training, evaluating, and improving incident command performance.
The conversation covers tactical-level supervision, strategic decision-making, the Eight Functions of Command, managing risk, and why a standardized command system works for departments of all sizes.
We also discuss the relationship between command and tactics, modern fire behavior research, and how repetition and simulation help incident commanders develop the skills to manage an incident when things get loud, complicated, and unpredictable.
Blue Card isn't about telling firefighters how to stretch a hoseline or which nozzle to use. It's about developing incident commanders who can manage the hazard zone safely and effectively.
Whether you're new to Blue Card, a longtime instructor, or someone who has questions about the system, this episode is worth a listen: podcasts.apple.com/us/podcasβ¦

π₯ GREAT INCIDENT COMMANDERS NEVER STOP LEARNING.
Incident command isn't something you master once and you're done. It's a skill that requires continuous training, practice, evaluation, and improvement.
REMEMBERING BRUNO β NINE YEARS LATER
Nine years ago today, the fire service lost a legend, a teacher, a mentor, and a friend. Alan V. Brunacini β Bruno.
Bruno changed the way we think about incident command, firefighter safety, leadership, and customer service. But perhaps his greatest legacy wasn't just the systems he developed or the books he wrote. It was the people he influenced and the way he treated others.
His brilliant mind, endless creativity, sense of humor, and genuine kindness made him one of a kind.
Today, we're sharing a special commemorative issue of B Shifter, originally published shortly after his passing. It's filled with personal stories, memories, and tributes from people whose lives were forever changed by knowing him.
We encourage you to take a few minutes to read it, remember Bruno, and reflect on the lessons he left us.

π₯ THATβS A WRAP IN SPRINGDALE, OHIO!
We wrapped up a new and improved Blue Card Division Operations & Expanded Command Teams Workshop in Springdale/Hamilton County, Ohio, with a full house of fire service professionals committed to improving incident command and firefighter safety!
As incidents grow in size and complexity, so must the command organization. Effective incident management isn't just about the Incident Commander. It requires well-trained Division Officers, effective tactical-level supervision, and a command team that can manage the work, support the firefighters doing it, and keep the IC informed.
That's what this workshop is all aboutβbuilding stronger command teams that can manage more complex incidents safely and effectively.
A huge thank you to the Springdale Fire Department for hosting and to everyone who spent two days with us training, learning, and getting better!

π₯ ALL DONE FOR NOW IN THE GOLDEN STATE!
We wrapped up another successful Blue Card Mayday Management Workshop in Berkeley, California, with incident commanders from across California, Arizona, and Washington!
Over two days, participants worked through real-world Mayday case studies, lessons learned from firefighter line-of-duty deaths, and practical command simulations focused on both preventing and managing Maydays.
Mayday management isn't something we can figure out when things go wrong. It requires a well-practiced command system, sound strategic decision-making, and the ability to manage firefighter rescue operations while continuing to stabilize the incident.
A huge thank you to everyone who traveled to Berkeley, participated in the discussions, and invested two days in improving their command skills and firefighter safety.
