My elderly neighbor knocked on my door one Tuesday morning.
He was holding a spare key.
"I need a favor," he said.
"Can you water my plants while I'm in the hospital?"
I laughed.
"Of course."
"It'll probably only be a few days, right?"
He smiled.
"I hope so."
That was the last time I ever saw him alive.
A week later, his daughter came by to tell me he'd passed away peacefully.
I offered my condolences and handed her the key.
She looked at it and said,
"No..."
"My dad wanted you to keep watering them."
I thought she'd misspoken.
She reached into her purse and handed me a handwritten letter.
"He said to give you this if he didn't come home."
My name was written across the front.
I had only known the man for three years.
We'd never had a deep conversation.
I couldn't understand why he had chosen me.
Then I opened the letter.
The first sentence made me sit down before I could finish reading.

For three years, nobody in his family took his business seriously.
Whenever he attended family gatherings, his cousins would ask when he planned to get a “real job.” His father worried he was wasting his degree. Even his closest friend advised him to give up and start applying for jobs again.
What they didn’t know was that he had spent months working from 6 AM until midnight, taking small orders and reinvesting almost every profit he made.

My sister stopped inviting me to her house after I confronted her husband about something I thought was unfair.
My sister and her husband had been married for seven years. Whenever I visited, I noticed that she did almost everything in the house. She cooked, cleaned, helped the children with homework, and still worked a full-time job. Her husband would sit in the living room watching television, complaining if dinner was late.
At first, I kept my opinions to myself. It wasn’t my marriage, and I didn’t want to become the relative who interfered in other people’s relationships.
But one Sunday, something happened that I couldn’t ignore.
We were having lunch when their youngest child accidentally spilled juice on the floor. My sister immediately stood up to clean it, but her husband stopped her and told her to teach the child some discipline.
Then he turned to her and said, “This is what happens when you let children do whatever they want. You never take your responsibilities seriously.”
I watched my sister quietly wipe the floor while he continued eating.
I finally said, “She’s been cooking since morning, looking after the children, and serving everyone. You could help instead of criticizing her.”

Laura and I lived together for two years. We got along fine until she started treating my clothes like hers. She used my shirt as a cleaning rag and turned my skirt into a pillowcase. Whenever I complained, she laughed and said I was making a big deal out of nothing.
One evening, I was cooking when the pot got too hot to handle. I grabbed the nearest piece of fabric, which happened to be her white dress.
She was furious.
“I didn’t know it was yours,” I said, laughing.
She never touched my things again.
My only regret? Not using it to clean the oven.

I’m a plumber and a single father of two. My wife died after giving birth to our youngest, and since then, I’ve been doing everything I can to raise my kids while keeping up with work.
Some jobs take me out of town for days, so my sister helps whenever she can. I’ve tried dating, but it never seems to work. Whenever I get serious with someone, my children start having problems with her.
This woman was different. She never complained about my schedule, and she understood that my children would always come first.
But recently, my sister told me something I couldn’t ignore.
Whenever my girlfriend stayed over, my daughter would call her aunt and ask to be picked up. My son had also started refusing to stay home when he knew she was coming.
I thought they were just struggling to adjust, so I asked my sister to give them time.
Then she told me my daughter had said something that worried her……..
