Read this post. And comments too. This is the woman who was advancing the foreign policy of a government directly involved in murder, starvation, blockade. And Maldives government endorsed her as UN Secretary General.
Perhaps the UAE's candidate for UN Secretary-General Lana Nusseibeh "could begin by explaining why her own government has been repeatedly implicated in helping fuel the genocidal catastrophe in Sudan." My latest piece for Zeteo on a big scandal at the UN: zeteo.com/p/the-uae-helped-f…

Between 2012 and 2026, Maldivian taxpayers have paid former President Mohamed Nasheed 43,286,183.79 in former presidential allowances. That is approximately 7,901 every single day for 15 years straight. As a country, we need to start a serious debate about this. It is not that we believe former presidents should receive no allowances. Rather, how much we pay, how we determine those amounts, and how long we continue paying them must reflect the economic realities of the Maldives.
After MPs’ salaries, the next petition should address former presidents’ allowances and benefits. It’s time to start this debate. Taxpayers have paid so far Maumoon: 72 million Nasheed: 43 million Waheed: 25 million Yameen: 9 million Solih: 10 million Total: 159 million. These payments will continue, and future former presidents will become eligible too. As a nation, we must ask, can we afford this? Are these allowances proportionate to our economic reality, national income and the living standards of ordinary Maldivians? Public money should reflect public priorities.

Add one more @naaif Can we get a better deal through an open solicitation process. Why go through a closed-door process that creates distrust, and poisons the governance systems unless a few individuals have to gain personally? #EagleHillsOut #AlabbarOut
In the debate surrounding the Eagle Hills deal, 'Dheenahtakaa, Qaumah takaa' argument is not a valid one. Instead, this needs to be a technical & academic discussion focused on our national FDI policy. There are several critical questions we should actually be raising regarding the RasMale' & Eagle Hills agreement: **How much is the government spending on dredging RasMale', & does this deal match what we are getting in return in the short term? Are 5,000 flats enough of an upfront return? **Is charging an acquisition cost necessary, or not? **Did the government carry out a proper valuation of RasMale' & conduct a study on the opportunity cost of the deal? **What is our red line for FDIs, & what standards will we be setting for foreign investors? Ultimately, we need a deeper debate regarding the scale of FDIs in the Maldives so we can reach a unified consensus on our national policy approach. 🚨 JUST IN: The Public Accounts Committee this morning approved an increase in the Chief Justice’s salary from 91,000 to 95,000. The proposal was made by Funadhoo MP Mohamed Mamdhooh and endorsed by Kela MP Abdul Shareef. Their justifications are a mockery of the public’s intelligence. Just a few days ago, these same MPs justified increasing the Speaker’s salary on the grounds that he was earning less than Deputy Speaker Saleem. Today, they justified increasing the Chief Justice’s salary on the grounds that he now earns less than the Speaker.
UPDATES: After further deliberations, or rather confusions, once again Funadhoo MP Mohamed Mamdhooh proposed: 1. Additional allowance for Parliament Speaker: 22,000. Increasing speakers salary to 95,000. 2. Increase ministers’ drivers’ car fuel allowance from 1,000 to 2,000 3. Ministers’ drivers’ basic salary to: 12,000 4. Additional living allowance for ministers’ drivers: 3,000 That brings a minister’s driver’s total monthly package to MVR 17,000. It used to be some 6000. Submitted by Funadhoo MP Mamdhooh and endorsed by Fuvamulak MP Hamad. Remember these names. Remember who proposes, who endorses, and who votes for these decisions.

MPs in the Public Accounts Committee raised the matter of other groups receiving special healthcare coverage outside Asandha. It is true that some political appointees, police officers, MNDF personnel, correctional officers and members of independent commissions also receive special healthcare benefits. Many people did even ask us why our petition focused only MPs. There are two reasons: 1. MPs are the only group that made laws granting themselves special healthcare benefits. They legislated these privileges for themselves, making them legal entitlements. 2. Everyone else receives these benefits under laws and budgets that MPs have approved. Unlike MPs, others cannot legislate their own laws or approve the national budget that funds them. That is why our petition focused on MPs. Parliament holds the legislative and budgetary power to reform or abolish these privileges for everyone else. But MPs cannot claim the moral authority to abolish special healthcare privileges for anyone else while they continue to enjoy those same privileges themselves. That’s why the change shall begin from MPs. Reform like this must begin with those who hold the power to make the rules.

I think we should all give @JAMIYYATHSALAF enough time to contemplate the FACT that the LESSER evil turned out to be the GREATER evil. It’s safe to say that Nasheed disguised himself as the lesser evil, only to control everything from behind the scenes through his proxy, Muizzu, while simultaneously working to take over MDP, after deceiving Faya into a political deadlock. This is some Dajjal-level deception, and Salaf will need plenty of time to reflect on how they were deceived by none other than Nasheed himself. Of course, I could be wrong. This could all be a conspiracy theory, but the pieces seem to fit together rather suspiciously.

So, @mohamed_alabbar , the Emirati billionaire behind Emaar Properties, working with Jared Kushner, Donald Trump’s son-in-law, tried to turn a historic site in Serbia into a luxury hotel and residential complex, with plans linked to a 99-year land lease. Sound familiar? Then keep reading. The government pushed to clear the way, people protested, and the project was eventually abandoned. Serbia’s student-led movement took to the streets demanding accountability. As protests spread and pressure mounted, Prime Minister of Serbia resigned, and the government was forced into a political crisis. But the students didn’t stop at protesting. They understood that if they wanted lasting change, they needed to challenge the establishment politically. The leaders of the student led movement believed they are activists who are not fit to lead the country. So what did they do? They organised, put forward a list of capable people. The Serbian student movement’s 250-person list included a broad mix of professionals, experts and people from outside traditional party politics, NOT just career politicians. They included Doctors and medical experts, University professors, Academicians, Lawyers and Legal Experts, Artists and Cultural figures, Farmers, Economic experts, Environmental specialists, and former public officials. The idea was to select people with professional experience and public credibility, many without previous high-level party involvement, rather than SIMPLY RECYCLING POLITICIANS. Students selected candidates through assemblies and collective decision-making. The people on the list are candidates for seats in Serbia’s national parliament, and voters elect them through a proportional representation system. Today, Serbias student led movement won the election, booting out the corrupt politicians and replacing them with people of integrity with expertise in their fields. Serbia showed us that people don’t have to accept a broken system forever. When people stand together, demand accountability and refuse to give up, change is possible. We need to stand up for our country the same way. Out with #MDPNC 🇲🇻 #NotoMDP #NotoPNC #EagleHillsOut #AlabbarOut #MuthoOut
Celebrations have erupted in the streets of Serbia's capital Belgrade, after long-standing leader Aleksandar Vučić admitted defeat to a student-led protest movement in snap parliamentary elections. Read more: bbc.in/4BwV5ga
