Well, at least Woody was true fo his word, Ron:
"Only three things can happen when you pass the ball, and two of them are bad."
Replying to @BobPagesports
Woody always answered my phone calls at home when I was a reporter on the Lantern student newspaper during the flap when the faculty kept his team from going to the Rose Bowl . Even after I wrote an article portraying him as "Wordy Haze," coach of the debate team that he led to the Brain Bowl using "three answers and a cloud of gray matter."
I loved Bill James' "Baseball Abstract." Brilliant stuff with clever, often very funny, writing. I had @billjamesonline on my "Page One" TV talk show on MSG in New York long ago. NO idea why he stopped publishing it in 1988!
Bob Sr. was a catcher. He told me that as a teen in Erick, Oklahoma he heard the St. Louis Browns were holding a tryout camp not too far away. Of COURSE he went, hoping to fulfill his deam of being an MLB catcher!
Upon arriving, he heard about another catcher there who was wowing everyone. Dad told me that once he saw Yogi at that camp he realized he was NOT going to have a career in baseball!
"Scouts baffled by kid who came with Joe Garagiola.
Squat, thick, Yogi Berra didn’t look anything like player until he took field.
Showed surprising quickness behind plate, equally surprising his powerful right arm."
"If they were to hold a managerial clinic, and just have the managers there, I would say Gene Mauch should run the clinic, that's how good a manager he was."
Dick Williams.
"Gene Mauch was known as a sharp tactician who loved the sacrifice bunt and the pinch hitter.
Mauch`s detractors faulted him for over managing and for giving more signs than the Coast Guard."
Author Norman L. Macht.

Doncha often wonder why anyone still supports these vile, lying, creeps somehow? The personal attacks by TRUMP himself on Abdul El-Sayed in my original home state of Michigan just because he (APPARENTLY) believes in a different "big, invisible, Man in the Sky" are not just nauseating - they're dangerous.
Republicans are running a myriad of corrupt adulterous degenerates for office, but Mike Johnson insists that Christians have a biblical obligation to vote for the GOP to "make sure that the righteous are ruling." peoplefor.org/rightwingwatch…

So much nuttiness, Paul! I well recall when Bob Sr. came home early from his law office and found me in our backyard throwing a baseball - lefthanded:
Dad: What on EARTH are you doing?
Me: I just read Red Schoendienst's biography and it said Red also practiced throwing lefty in case his right arm was ever injured and he couldn't throw anymore.
Dad: Don't be RIDICULOUS, Bobby!
Replying to @BobPagesports
I was born a lefty. My grandmother told my mom that I would grow out of it.
I learned from A.I. that World Series games always beat NBA games in ratings. BUT for regular season games.
The NBA pulls strong national regular-season ratings across its broadcast partners (ESPN/ABC, NBC, and Amazon Prime Video), averaging roughly 1.8 million viewers per game during recent windows.
MLB regularly draws smaller nationwide regular-season crowds on linear TV, averaging around 1.8 million for Sunday Night Baseball on ESPN and roughly 2.04 million on Fox, though local RSN and streaming viewership remains deeply entrenched with a 162-game inventor.
(But, again, how many baseball fans won't bother to watch tonight with the World Series basically over?)
Replying to @BobPagesports @MLB
WS will kill the basket ball game Bob ,unscientific poll from what I see and read on Twitter, a ton of people do not like the NBA.
What were these idiots thinking?! Well, A.I. knows ALL:
Key Reasons for Forced Conversion
Superstition and Religious Stigma: The left hand was frequently associated with evil, bad luck, or uncleanliness across many global cultures and religions. Linguistic roots reinforced this bias; the Latin word sinister means "left" (and also "unlucky/evil"), while dexter means "right" (giving us words like dexterity).
Throughout the 19th and much of the 20th century rigid discipline demanded that all children behave, sit, and write identically. Teachers often viewed being different as a behavioral or developmental flaw that needed "correcting".
Early writing instruments, such as dip pens and fountain pens, posed a mechanical problem for left-handed writers. Pushing a nib across the paper instead of pulling it caused ink to smudge and nibs to catch or tear the page. Standardized handwriting curricula (such as the Palmer Method) and desks were built strictly for right-handed ergonomics.

True. I'm left-handed, despite the efforts of my third-grade teacher to force me to change.
My peeps tell me YOU are older than DIRT - and you just proved it by posting this ancient video, a video featuring a criminal no less: the waiter! He somehow thought that HE could replace the great Jerome Horwitz!!! No one could replace my hero - not even his big brother Shemp!
It'll be interesting to see the TV ratings tomorrow!
@MLB is only what USED to be "our national pastime." The NFL and the NBA are more popular now. With the World Series basically over, what will Fox's ratings be with the NBA going head to head against them tonight at the same time for Pistons vs Knicks at the Garden?
(ESPN) FSU president Richard McCullough to fans: 'I understand your frustration."
(And the Florida State "University" prez continued, "We have bought student-athletes from all over the country to help us make millions in football money by WINNING! Hell, many of these "student-athletes" couldn't spell "cat" if ya spotted 'em the "c" and the 't," but we took em in anyway. We just gotta buy better players fer next year!"
Here's something very few people know: there was a time when children who were lefthanded were SWITCHED to righthanded writing! My mother, born in 1926, was a lefty but an elementary school teacher announced, "I will NOT have a lefthander in my class." Mom was not allowed to write lefthanded!
She spent her life with terrible (but usually legible) handwriting from the right side.
Replying to @BobPagesports @GraigKreindler
My 9th-grade social studies teacher told our entire class that I had “immature handwriting.”
Fortunately, I loved her
Unfortunately, she was 100% correct.
But be careful with THIS, RR! As I've always said, without the Great State of Ohio neither Michigan nor Michigan State would even be able to FIELD football teams!
Ohio State has NEVER needed players from Michigan.
Replying to @BobPagesports
Of course Woody had no problem RECRUITING in Michigan. Principles go only so far...lol
Sometimes I wonder, Pete, whether this is LACK of intelligence!
Maybe the answer is to stop using the words: Analytics, Stats or SABRmetrics.
It's intelligence.
What works? What is the counter to that thing that works? What is the next thing that will work?
In the world of intelligence, there are office cats (analysts), planners (coaching), and field operators (retired players).
It's a hard truth...the office cats want to be the field operators, but they cannot. Office cats are essential, they see things the field guys cannot. A smart team finds and develops the best analysts. 10 million well spent on quants can win more than that new 2nd baseman.
However, quants work in the spaceship far removed from the ground truth. Despite all the credentials, they will make mistakes at a rate that far exceeds their comprehension. Field operators are essential to improving the quants' capabilities.
The field dudes get too granular. We need the spaceship to help us see the forest.
The retired players hold the ground truth. A dude like @shegone03 knows what it takes, day to day to do the job. He knows the value of contact when a team is desperate to put the ball in play.
In MLB, the tolerances between failure and success are tight. The oppo is great and always gets a vote on outcomes. Often, team A beats team B because they won 53% of the coin flips.

🇺🇸John Basilone earned his Medal of Honor at Guadalcanal. His battalion commander? "Chesty" Puller!
On October 24–25, 1942, Basilone kept machine guns firing through repeated Japanese assaults, repaired a disabled gun under fire, and fought his way through to bring ammunition to his men.
Two Marine legends. The same desperate battle.
Meet the commander behind that battalion. 👇
✅Five Navy Crosses.
✅A chest supposedly made of steel.
✅Unshakable determination.
✅Patriotism in his bones.
🇺🇸 Meet "Chesty" Puller, the legendary Leatherneck.
Lieutenant General Lewis Burwell Puller is widely recognized as the most decorated Marine in U.S. history, and the only Marine ever awarded five Navy Crosses.
But why "Chesty"?
The usual explanation points to his barrel chest and unmistakable posture: shoulders back, chest thrust forward. The nickname’s exact origins remain uncertain.
Then came the joke: his chest had supposedly been damaged in battle and replaced with a steel plate. That was Marine folklore, not medical history. The man was formidable enough without the imaginary armor.
On the night of October 24–25, 1942, Puller commanded the 1st Battalion, 7th Marines, part of the 1st Marine Division, on Guadalcanal.
His men defended the approaches to Henderson Field against repeated Japanese attacks. In darkness and pouring rain, Puller moved along the line, directing the defense and encouraging his Marines. Reinforcements helped them hold.
He earned his third Navy Cross there (He had earned his first two Navy Crosses leading Nicaraguan troops against insurgents in 1930 and 1932, repeatedly facing superior enemy forces).
His fourth came at Cape Gloucester in January 1944, where he took charge after two battalion commanders were wounded, reorganized their units under fire and led an attack against a fortified position.
He later commanded the 1st Marines at Peleliu.
In Korea, his leadership during the withdrawal from the Chosin Reservoir earned him a fifth Navy Cross. He also received the Army’s Distinguished Service Cross.
Puller retired in 1955 after 37 years of service. He died on October 11, 1971, aged 73.
The steel chest was a joke. The courage behind the legend was real!
