#ALittleHistoryOfPhilosophy #NigelWarburton
40 easy-to-read chapters about 40+ philosophers. Great introduction to who’s who, who’s when, & what did they say. Useful reference book as I grope my way through more difficult stuff #amreading #goodreads #greatreads #readingcommunity
#MoonTiger #PenelopeLively clever & affecting. About the unknowability of each of us & how death erases the possibility of being known #amreading #goodreads #greatreads #readingcommunity
#NobodysFool #RichardRusso had me laughing aloud by p3. Each time I picked it up I was sucked into a newly hilarious episode. Stands comparison with #Middlemarch but don’t let that put you off. Much funnier! 10 stars out of 5. #amreading #goodreads #greatreads #readingcommunity
#EthicsInTheRealWorld #PeterSinger
90 short opinion-pieces on a wide range of issues by a secular, utilitarian philosopher. I read 1 or 2 a day & mostly agreed with him, so it seems I’m a secular utilitarian too!

#TheHeavenAndEarthGroceryStore #JamesMcBride Sorry but #DNF Author eloquently “telling” me about people & events I failed to connect with & forgot 5 minutes after I put the book down. Detail piled on detail. #amreading #goodreads #greatreads #readingcommunity
#Glitz #ElmoreLeonard Nice mix of comedy & crime.
Complex plotting. Leonard makes his readers work hard, reading between the lines , but that is one of the many pleasures of reading him #amreading #goodreads #greatreads #readingcommunity
#TheKindWorthKilling #PeterSwanson Clever plot with several unforeseen twists & a satisfying denouement. I was almost hoping the killer might get away with it, but no spoilers from me. I enjoyed it a lot #amreading #goodreads #greatreads #readingcommunity

charmingly dated, historically interesting “Even when compared with the slow growth of ideas [in] the dark ages the history of reckoning presents a picture of desolate stagnation" #amreading #goodreads #greatreads #readingcommunity
#ThenWeCameToTheEnd #JoshuaFerris took me a while to get used to the 1st person plural. A little longer to notice it wasn’t just humorous observations, that strong storylines were developing. And then I was hooked. Bravo. #amreading #goodreads #greatreads #readingcommunity
#WittgensteinAVeryShortIntroduction #ACGrayling
It does what the title says it will. For the next week or two, I could probably hold my own at a party on the subject #amreading #goodreads #greatreads #readingcommunity
#TheAndromedaStrain #MichaelCrichton reminded me of #ProjectHailMary #AndyWeir in the way it drew on (& increased my knowledge of) real science while remaining a bare knuckle ride. 5 stars #amreading #goodreads #greatreads #readingcommunity
#ThePeepshow #10RillingtonPlace #KateSummerscale Interesting that the 1971 film portrayed only one theory of what happened. But is the appeal more to readers' desire to be titillated than to their curiosity about who done it? #amreading #goodreads #greatreads #readingcommunity
#WhyYouShouldReadChildrensBooksEvenThoughYouAreSoOldAndWise #KatherineRundell Beautiful little hardback book. 62 pages for the essay, plus short extract from one of the author’s own books for children #amreading #goodreads #greatreads #readingcommunity
#NothingToSeeHere #KevinWilson
Weird but engaging. Good vs bad parenting; good vs bad friendship. Various relationships beautifully done & some excruciatingly good dialogue passages #amreading #goodreads #greatreads #readingcommunity
#Snap #BelindaBauer Cleverly complex & gripping plot, every character full of personality, Bauer’s usual deft mix of humour with thriller, & writing that's easy to read in that way that many readers assume is easy to write #amreading #goodreads #greatreads #readingcommunity
#MyDearKabul From Aug 21, when #Taliban retook #Afghanistan, for a year, the edited WhatsApp messages of 21 Afghan women writers. Depressing reading, but I’m glad to have read it. Counting my blessings #amreading #goodreads #greatreads #readingcommunity
#Gilead #MarilynneRobinson earned 5 stars from me in 2018, 3 stars now. Beautiful writing, enjoyably flawed narrator, but key generational problems over slavery, civil war, racial discrimination too oblique to make full sense of #amreading #goodreads #greatreads #readingcommunity
#YoungJaneYoung #GabrielleZevin #novel based on and referencing #Clinton #Lewinski Brilliant, witty writing #amreading #goodreads #greatreads #readingcommunity

#ASpoolOfBlueThread #familysaga not a genre I normally like, but #AnneTyler does it so well I'm won over. She writes about nothing much happening like an angel. Brilliant, funny, moving #amreading #novel #goodreads #greatreads #readingcommunity
