“The RCS Revolution: A Few Days Later”
It's been a few days since I got so excited after watching a one-minute video of the Tesla Roadster 2 that I sat down and wrote about it.
I haven't had the chance to look into the Roadster 2 in detail.
I've been busy working on my manga manuscripts and preparing projects.
But I've learned a few things since then.
The system installed in the Roadster is indeed RCS.
Once again, I'm SO amazed.
The very level of thinking behind this idea is on a completely different level.
However, I've learned that it uses compressed air as its propellant.
Apparently, in that respect, it's fundamentally similar to the RCS used by SpaceX.
When I first saw the Roadster demo footage a few days ago, I wondered whether they might be using something like liquid nitrogen rather than compressed air. Either way, the underlying principle is similar.
Still, I was a little disappointed to learn that it uses compressed air.
The reason I found this so astonishing and revolutionary was that I imagined something much bigger than a new car: a business built around selling RCS systems, and the revolution that such a business could bring about.
Compressed-air systems are too heavy and bulky, and their specific impulse is too low to be particularly efficient.
That makes it difficult to imagine this system being easily installed in countless vehicles and new devices, triggering a widespread technological revolution.
In fact, I've heard that installing RCS on the Roadster 2 would mean eliminating the passenger seat, turning the car into a single-seater.
That's how bulky the compressed-air system is...
I understand why they would want to use a safe gas.
But when I first watched the video, I thought, Surely Tesla has developed a propellant that's safe for both people and the natural environment.
I thought this technology could be important to humanity's future.
Traditional RCS propellants, such as hydrogen peroxide, can be dangerous to use around people and can pose hazards if they leak.
What I hope is that Tesla will take this project a step further and develop a modular RCS system using replaceable liquid-nitrogen cartridges.
Even better would be the development of a propellant that offers higher specific impulse while allowing the system to be made safer and more compact.
Liquid nitrogen could freeze the driver in the event of a collision.
Carbon dioxide could both cause freezing and temporarily suffocate someone.
Of course, either the way, gas could also help suppress fires.
In an emergency, perhaps a car equipped with RCS could even act as a personal mini fire engine, using its system to help put out fires in a car or a house.
For RCS to become a revolutionary technology that transforms everyday life and society, I believe it needs to be a modular system with replaceable cartridges containing an efficient and safe propellant.
The discharged gas must be safe, and the system should be versatile enough to support a wide range of applications.
A higher molecular weight is generally advantageous for achieving higher thrust in a cold-gas propulsion system.
However, gases released near the ground can accumulate in the surrounding environment, depending on their properties and the conditions.
They must be safe to use in such situations.
And these systems need to be manufactured in a wide range of sizes, from extremely small to very large.
An RCS unit designed for a smartphone would need to be smaller than a finger or two, while one intended to help move a shipping container would need to be considerably larger. (Of course, another solution for achieving greater thrust would be to increase the number of units.)
Any way, in any case, I imagined an RCS revolution.
And although only a few days have passed, it seems that people are already beginning to imagine all sorts of ways RCS could be used in everyday life.
I sincerely hope this develops into a genuine revolution.
More than anything, I'm disappointed that I can't draw my work about this.
I wanted to show you these ideas through manga, not just through words, you know.

#DragonBall40th #DRAGONBALL40周年
When I was asked to illustrate the cover for Dragon Ball 40th anniversary box set, two thoughts immediately came to my mind.
Frist,I’m nowhere near worthy of taking on a such project like this.
But there was absolutely no way I could turn it down.
and second was, This was probably the only chance I’d ever get to officially draw Dragon Ball tribute art for a publisher.
So I decided to go all out and draw as many Dragon Ball characters as I possibly could!
Rather than trying to outdo the other mangaka senseis in terms of artistic skill, I wanted to show my respect for Toriyama Akira-sensei and Dragon Ball by drawing more characters than anyone else.
And that’s exactly what I did. I went all out and drew a ton of Dragon Ball characters!
Vol. 26 Artist's Comment:
私がドラゴンボールのカバーを描かせていただけるなんて、ただただ光栄です。それに尽きます。
It’s an absolute honor to be able to draw a Dragon Ball cover. That’s all there is to it.

"The Light Spreading Across Senku and Circles of Confusion"
When dust is present on a lens, scattered light can create circles of confusion around the dust particles.
In practical terms, this effect indicates that the lens is not in ideal condition.
However, in modern filmmaking, this effect was once added to CG footage to make it feel as though it had been filmed through a real camera lens.
I think it’s a technique used to give CG images a sense of reality, as if they were captured through an actual lens.
When I depict circles of confusion caused by dust on a lens, I do so with the feeling that “This moment is real.
I want it to feel real.”
Like stars reflected in the eyes, this is one of my signature techniques for manga visual effects, reserved for moments of particular significance.

Years later, in 2016, I received an official offer to create a one-shot for Ghost in the Shell Comic Tribute, giving me the opportunity to draw it as an officially commissioned work.
December 2016 was a particularly busy time for me. I was serializing ORIGIN while working on the Ghost in the Shell short story, and it was also around this time that my serialization of Dr. STONE was decided.

These are parody illustrations I drew inspired by Ghost in the Shell and Orion, two works by the great mangaka, Masamune Shirow-sensei.
They were part of a work titled TOON.
This was around 1998.
