The paperback is now out. At a time when the Middle East is once again in turmoil, immodestly I suggest you take a look at my book to see how the region ended up the way it is. Also available as an audiobook.
Picador just sent first copies of my new book, published on 1st Sept. It follows my BBC series Our Man in the Middle East. Ridiculously proud that I took most of the photos, including the jacket. If you need one book to help you navigate the Mideast, I hope it will be this one.

Colin and Wendy - two impressive, remarkable and thoroughly admirable people - and parents.
The years roll by as we grow older, but those we lost are frozen in time. Tim is forever 12, with 34 years of life taken from him. What he would have achieved, we dont know, but his legacy charity survives him and supports others. Tim would not ask for more

My latest for @NewStatesman
Jeremy Bowen: The world is more dangerous today than I can ever remember The world is at another moment of transformation; we see it everywhere. The political and economic turmoil that drives people towards rich countries where increasingly they are not welcome. Climate change that is doing much more damage than simply ruining holidays in Europe’s burning tourist hotspots. The power of asymmetric warfare to confound the superpowers. In the Oval Office sits a president driven by vanity and instinct, and surrounded by a court of advisers who know better than to question his decisions or challenge him with inconvenient truths. Iran has demonstrated the vulnerability of the world economy to the weaponisation of geography. Blocking the Strait of Hormuz put a chokehold on the global economy. Americans who already feel hard up are spending more on petrol and might take their revenge on the president at the midterm elections in November. Worldwide, the longer trade is paralysed; more people will go hungry as farmers lack fertiliser. Global supply chains are more interdependent, and vulnerable, than they were even at the turn of the century. The world’s other chokepoints await the next big crises. The Strait of Malacca, which connects the Pacific and the Indian Oceans, is less than two miles wide at its narrowest point. One fifth of world trade, estimated at $2.45trn by one think tank, passes through the Taiwan Strait every year. It is around 100 miles wide, but if China ever took military action against Taiwan, it would be the main theatre of war. Economic disruption is bad enough on its own. But it also feeds in to a world of suspicion and populist politics that is sharpening fears of war between the great powers. It seemed unthinkable in the Cold War, impossible in the West’s warm glow after the fall of the USSR, but stopping one happening might be the biggest challenge any leader will face in the second quarter of this century. After Vladimir Putin threatened “consequences that you have never faced in your history” to anyone who intervened against his full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Joe Biden posted on X that “a direct confrontation between Nato and Russia is World War III. And something we must strive to prevent.” Putin has reprised versions of his warning since then. It is largely seen as a bluff, and has not stopped Western military aid to Ukraine, but it slowed it down. With the Kremlin under unprecedented pressure now that Ukrainian drones are striking deep inside Russia, some strategists are discussing whether his threats are less of a bluff than some assume. @BowenBBC newstatesman.com/politics/20…

I think you’ll find that the residents of the illegal settlements do not come from the 20% or so of Israeli citizens who are not Jews. And many (not all) have a religious justification for their presence.
Jeremy Bowen hammering the idea of the illegality of ‘Jewish settlements’. Surely he means ‘Israeli settlements’? But he says it too many times for it to be a slip of the tongue.

Back at the 1966 World Cup even if you were the father of two legendary English football players - Bobby and Jack Charlton - you still had to do your shift down the pit.
July 1966 and the country watches on as the Charlton brothers take England into the World Cup final… But their dad - Bob- misses it all because he’s working a coal shift two miles underground The Coal Board and the BBC put on a special showing once back at the surface… 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

As England prepare to face Argentina in the World Cup, a fascinating video from the ill tempered clash at the 1966 tournament. Legendary commentator Kenneth Wolstenholme describes the scene with relish.

In these globally turbulent times one man has regularly acted as a wise, thoughtful and witty guide for listeners of @BBCr4today. The former Head of MI6 Sir Alex Younger has analysed, explained and contextualised the actions of Trump, Putin, Xi and the Ayatollahs. After he first appeared in the programme I was lucky enough to get to know Alex and call him my friend. I’m desperately sad to hear the news I’ve long feared was coming. Alex has died after months trying to cheat the prognosis he was given whe. They discovered the tumour he nicknamed “Putin”. We’re always told not to speak of a fight with cancer because it risks implying that only those strong enough survive. I understand that. I really do but sod it. Alex fought so hard to find a treatment to give him a little longer to be with Sarah and their lovely children. And he used every last minute of the short time he did have to be with family and friends and to do what he spent a lifetime in the shadows doing - using his intelligence to understand the world, to explain it but, above all, to keep us all safe.

I’ve had loads of abuse for this, predictably, and plenty of people have accused me of supporting Hezbollah. But no one seems keen to explain why targetting the Lebanese medics who came to help the 3 TV journos was justified.
The Geneva Convention says it’s a war crime to target journalists, even if they work for an enemy organisation. It’s also a war crime to target medical workers. After the killing of 3 Lebanese TV journos last week, several medics coming to help them were killed as well.

(1/10) @realDonaldTrump cited me as supporting his attack on Iran and expressing regret we didn’t do it during the Biden Administration. Except I didn’t.
Trump: I've heard that today Blinken made a statement that he should have done it. Thanks a lot, I appreciate it. Blinken is Biden’s guy I guess. Who the hell knows who he is. But he came out with the statement that they should have done it, they made a mistake

This is brilliant, tremendously interesting and ends with a lovely piece of Soviet era film music.
I’m back with another Reading Russia Weekend Extra. In this edition: what the Russian papers have been saying about the talks in Abu Dhabi and the Olympics in Milan-Cortina, plus memories of a Nato chief visiting Moscow 25 years ago. #ReadingRussia

A fitting tribute to the great man. I had a taxi driver once in the US who told me how honoured he’d been to serve Mark Tully with a whisky and soda when he was a waiter back home in India. Mark’s fans were legion.
Sad to learn of the death of former BBC foreign correspondent Sir Mark Tully. For so many years he was known as the ‘Voice of India.’ As a tribute I play one of the pieces Sir Mark selected on BBC Radio’s Desert Island Discs: Danny Boy.

I have said this before, Emma Tucker, the Editor of Wall Street Journal deserves a Pulitzer. She is a Murdoch editor, leading on the facts, joining the @nytimes and Bellingcat and saying ICE is lying. PS Fox News is in the same building as her at 1211.
Worth noting that the @WSJ has joined with the @nytimes and Bellingcat to say that ICE is lying in its description of the shooting of Alex Pretti. The video evidence more and more supports the view that this was an gratuitous execution. wsj.com/us-news/videos-contr…
