In case you missed it, a hot-mic moment at Beijing’s WWII anniversary parade this week captured Xi and Putin discussing immortality and the future of human longevity.
But the real story is about how China and Russia are making longevity and biotechnology national priorities.
𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐚’𝐬 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐲:
China has rolled out aggressive, state-backed investment in biotechnology, organ transplants, AI-driven health platforms, and anti-aging research, reportedly spending tens of billions of dollars annually on these initiatives. Its government views biotech as central to both economic growth and geopolitical power, pouring resources into labs and encouraging public-private collaboration.
𝐑𝐮𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐚’𝐬 𝐀𝐩𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐜𝐡:
Putin has long talked about extending human life, linking it to national strength. Russia has invested in organ transplant programs and biotech startups, with spending estimated at hundreds of millions to low billions of dollars annually, though still far below China’s scale. Still, Putin frames longevity as part of his vision of national renewal and global competition.
𝐔.𝐒. 𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐞𝐟𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐬:
In the U.S., significant progress is already underway. The @NIH provides over $47 billion in annual funding, making it the world’s largest supporter of biomedical research, while the @NIHAging, with its nearly $5 billion budget, drives cutting-edge aging and Alzheimer’s research.
@ARPA_H launches high-risk, high-reward programs such as PROSPR (Proactive Solutions for Prolonging Resilience/@BrackLab) to accelerate breakthroughs in aging biology and chronic disease, and FRONT (Functional Repair of Neocortical Tissue) to advance regenerative approaches.
Meanwhile, the Alliance for Longevity Initiatives (A4LI) is working to ensure Congress and the public understand what’s at stake and why America must lead in longevity science. By advocating for increased funding, strategic research programs, and policy support, A4LI helps lawmakers, investors, and the public recognize the critical steps needed for the U.S. to maintain its edge in this rapidly advancing field.
To ensure Americans can achieve longer, healthier lives and to remain competitive with China and Russia, the U.S. must treat longevity as a national priority, scaling investment and coordinating efforts across research, policy, and innovation.

✉ Let’s keep the momentum going. Help us reach 400 letters (and beyond)!
Since July, our community has sent 375 letters to Congress urging support for longevity science. We’re so close to 400 and with Members of Congress in their final week of summer recess, this is the perfect time to get their attention about implementing A4LI’s proposals to drive aging research.
It takes less than a minute:
1. Go to: actionnetwork.org/letters/dr…
2. Enter your name & address (so they know you’re a constituent).
3. Select your prefix and choose “Health” as the subject to ensure it lands in the right inbox.
4. Personalize the message if you’d like—or send it as-is.
Share this link with friends, neighbors, and colleagues—multiple letters from one district push your Member higher on the priority list.
Together, we can make healthy aging a Congressional priority. 💪

This week on A4LI’s Scientist Spotlight, we chat with Jillian Cox, PhD Candidate in Dr. Sarah Ocañas' (@OcanasSR) Lab at Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation (@OMRF).
Growing up in Oklahoma, Jillian’s curiosity led her down the path of science. In our conversation, she shares how her background shaped her passion for research and walks us through her work on how sex chromosomes influence the differences we often see between men and women in brain diseases and disorders.

Launched in 2012 by Dr. Felipe Sierra, then Director of the NIA Division of Aging Biology, the GSIG was established on the recognition that aging biology is a fundamental driver of most chronic diseases. Today, it includes participation from over 20 NIH Institutes — a much-needed cross-agency effort we’ve long championed!

🚨 As agencies discuss the implementation of New Approach Methodologies (NAMs), it’s critical we don’t leave behind what still works.
🧬 Mice are still the gold standard for aging research, offering whole-organism insights, rapid testing, and decades of proven value.
📉 Replacing them too soon risks slowing down longevity drug development and stalling scientific progress.
💡 The NIA Intervention Testing Program (ITP) should be expanded, not reduced. A recent paper by leading researchers calls for biotech companies to implement leaner, cost-effective ITP-style studies during IND-enabling stages

Millions of Americans are living with the damage caused by strokes and traumatic brain injuries.
Today we launched a program in ARPA-H to restore function to the neocortex.
NEW: No technology currently exists to repair damaged brain tissue and fully restore lost function. FRONT aims to enable millions with what is considered permanent brain damage to regain lost functions, including motor control, vision, and speech. arpa-h.gov/news-and-events/a…
