There were a lot of opinions on Cade Mays' debut, but offensive line play is too nuanced to assess live. Last night and this morning, I scoured his 68 snaps from the end zone angle of the All-22 film and came away plenty encouraged by what I saw: detroitfootball.net/p/detroi…

A reoccurring theme with Campbell. He’s not a number-cruncher, but his gut instinct often aligns with the analytics. It’s a rare talent that stems from all of his experience as a player and coach.
Despite making the analytically favorable call to go for it on fourth down late in yesterday’s win against the #Packers, Dan Campbell said there was no data involved in his decision-making process. Just wanted to put the game in Jared Goff’s hands instead of Jordan Love’s.

Jared Goff now leads all quarterbacks in success rate. No pass play through seven weeks has been more likely to produce a positive result than a Goff dropback.

I wonder who is right. Mike Tomlin or Pete Prisco and Damien Harris?
.@PriscoCBS and @DHx34 react to Dan Campbell going for it on 4th down deep inside the Lions' territory. 👀 #NFLPostgame

MVP Candidate Jared Goff has thrown more touchdowns (14) than he has taken sacks (12), and his next interception will be his first since January. Averaging 9.3 yards/dropback when operating play action.   Reflex has so often been to credit his play callers over the years. Maybe he's just good.

Cade Mays was tossing bodies around on that opening drive, especially in pass protection. Which is why they signed him. Looked angry to have missed six games. Good start.

Absolutely criminal that Nick doesn’t have more. Follow him!
I stopped caring about follower numbers a long time ago, but it is cool to see I hit the 3000 mark. I really appreciate all the support I get from so many people I respect in this industry, everyone who has been with me since day 1 and all of the new people who love my analysis.

Just got done working my way through the defensive film from yesterday, focusing exclusively on Abney. Had zero expectations going into the watch. Some quick thoughts. 1. Free safety is often deep enough to not involved in the play, so overall impact is limited. 2. There were some early coverage confusions, busts that didn't hurt because the Cardinals didn't see/attack them. Positioning got better in the second half. 3. Frequently used as a bracket defender on McBride and occasionally Wilson. Thought that was where Abney was best on Sunday. 4. He was not part of the red zone package. As soon as the Cards moved inside the 20, he subbed out for Mills. Makes sense. Can't throw everything on a rookie's plate making his first start. 5. Run support was minimal, but he did have an excellent run blitz and tackle. Overall, tackling was good in limited opportunities. Not sure it will make for an actually good film review write up. I'll decide that tomorrow morning. Better focus would probably be how the Lions approached trying to take away McBride/Wilson, with a subsection on Abney's safety debut.
