An Investment in Your Future Dear Reader, On a beautiful late spring afternoon, twenty-five years ago, two young men graduated from the same college. They were very much alike, these two young men. Both had been good students, both were personable and both—as young college graduates are - were filled with ambitious dreams for the future. Recently, these men returned to their college for their 25th reunion. They were still very much alike. Both were happily married. Both had children. And both, it turned out, had gone to work for the same 25,000 person tech company after graduation, and were still there. But there was a difference. One of the men was manager of a small team in that company. The other was its President. What Made The Difference Have you ever wondered, as I have, what makes this kind of difference in people's lives? It isn't a native intelligence or talent or dedication. It isn't that one person wants success and the other doesn't. The difference lies in what each person knows and how he or she makes use of that knowledge. And that is why I am writing to you and to people like you about the EDGE email newsletter. For that is the whole purpose of The EDGE: to give its readers knowledge—knowledge that they can use to get an edge in business and in life. An Email Newsletter Unlike Any Other You see, The EDGE is unique. I'm not that old, but old enough to have had some spectacular successes and spectacular failures in business and in life. Knowledge Is Power Right now, I am looking at a past issue at the first piece about a life altering event I had,  A Partner from Sequoia Capital Showed up At My Door, and remembering the lesson readers learned from it to give them an edge. Further down, I see article on why you don't want to keep up with the Jones and how you can be richer than they are.  Then there's pieces on a $400,000 productivity tip, marketing tactics, saving tips, real estate investing and more. If you have never read The EDGE, you cannot imagine how useful it can be to you. Simply fill in your email below and you're in. About those two college classmates I mentioned at the beginning of this letter: they graduated from college together and together got started in the business world. But I can guarantee that you will find The EDGE always interesting, always reliable, and always useful. Warmly, Brandon White, Writer P.S. How to Use Risk Correctly to Accelerate Your Success Conventional wisdom says there's no shortcut to success. Yet, if you're being honest with yourself, you spend some time searching for "that magic shortcut". Whether that's making more money, losing weight, building your business, achieving that promotion you want, running a marathon, riding a century or some other goal you've set for yourself. I don't know about you, but even through I know there's no real shortcuts I still find myself reading some pitch that claims they have the magic shortcut. Don't beat yourself up over searching for that shortcut, we all are lured in by them. The human brain is always looking for ways to avoid pain at all costs. It wants the shortest, least painful path. Having said all that... What if conventional wisdom is wrong and there IS A SHORTCUT that actually works? I've been thinking about that question lately. And you know what? There is actually a shortcut available to you right now...Risk. First a story of the risk shortcut used incorrectly and then THE EQUATION how to use it correctly. A few years ago I met an entrepreneur at a summit where I was speaking and he pitched me on a kids game he had developed to help with learning new math and science skills. The guy brought his wife and young daughter to the summit and they were a happy couple. As we were talking he proudly proclaimed that he was all in on this idea and he already quit his job. That was the first alarm bell that went off in my head. I asked again just to make sure I heard him right, "You quit your day job? How much profit are you making?" He said, "Yes. I'm all in. We don't have sales yet but this game it great. It will sell." Immediately I asked, "What's your personal burn rate and how much runway do you have?" He responded, "I have about 6 months." His wife and daughter are standing there and I'm getting a little concerned about dealing out some hard reality, but better now then when it's too late I tell myself. Next question... "How much does this game sell for, what is your margin and what is your customer acquisition cost?" He says, "It sells for $19.95 we make $12 on each one and I'm not sure on the customer acquisition cost (CAC) because we aren't selling it yet. " I ask, "How many do you have to sell to make your monthly burn rate?" He responds, "Ummm, I'm not sure." "Ok, let's do some back of the napkin math. Let's assume your monthly all in personal burn rate (mortgage, car payment, insurance, food, etc, everything) is $5,000/month. That means you need to sell at least 416 units a month. BUT, here's the problem with that math, it assumes you're selling direct, you have no CAC or other business expenses. So, let's just call it an even 1,000 units a month you need to sell. HOW are you going to do that?" Silence...with a stare. You get where this is going. Even when I asked for his financials, they weren't well planned out. If you want to sell 1,000 units of anything just on the Internet alone you have to account for how many impressions you need to have, how many of those impressions turn into engaged users, how many of those click on your "ad", and how many of those add the item to their cart and how many of those carts actually check out... Oh then you have to account for returns on a monthly basis to get to your net sales units. Before I said my next piece of advice I asked if they really wanted to hear it. They looked at me and said, "Yes!" "The first thing you should do is go back to where you worked and ask for your job back. If they will not take you, spend 100% of your energy going to find a job. Only after you find a full time job should you spend another second on this business because you haven't prepared correctly." Giving that advice pained me, but it was the best advice because this entrepreneur was going to find himself in a really bad financial situation with this family. This guy took the "entrepreneur risk", but didn't take it correctly. Had he been single, twenty-one, and with a burn rate of $2,000 or even less I "might" have given different advice, probably not through. The Risk Equation Risk, in and of itself doesn’t yield rewards. It has to be used thoughtfully, within a highly-planned framework. You need to control everything you can control because there are so many variables that you can not, that you need every little edge you can get. Think of it like counting cards at Blackjack. Even though doing so gives a really small edge, it's the difference between winning and losing money over the long term of playing. Your equation for taking risks that lead more often than not: Success = Risk + Planning + Preparation + Persistence There's an added benefit you'll get if you use this equation and that's LUCK. You'll be making your own luck by putting yourself in a position with the best odds. Turns out even taking a risk doesn't have a shortcut, BUT, if you do the work, that risk is much more likely to pay off :) Colonel David Hackworth, a decorated Army war veteran once said, "If you find yourself in a fair fight you didn’t plan properly." Use risk the right way and you'll be putting the odds in your favor every time! Your move

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮 𝟭𝟯𝘁𝗵-𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘂𝗿𝘆 𝗠𝗌𝗻𝗞 𝗖𝗮𝗻 𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗬𝗌𝘂 𝗔𝗯𝗌𝘂𝘁 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗎𝗶𝗻𝗎 𝗣𝗿𝗌𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆 Who knew a 13th-century monk could hold the key to unlocking your productivity potential? Today we're going over a research study on Monks productivity and then going over 4 practices of medieval monasteries that you can use to overcome modern-day struggles with things like focus, information overload, and the ever-present urge to multitask. While life in a monastery might seem far removed from our daily hustle, research suggests otherwise. A study published in the journal Work, Employment and Society, titled "The Rule and the Routine: Monasteries and the Organization of Work in the Middle Ages," explores the highly structured and efficient daily routines of monks. The researchers concluded that routines, centered around prayer, work, and communal life, fostered a remarkable capacity for sustained focus and task completion. 4 Tips from Medieval Masters of Time Management 👉Structured Schedules: Monks followed a strict daily schedule, ensuring dedicated time for focused work, prayer, and rest. Implementing a similar structure, even loosely, can combat procrastination and create a sense of control over your day. 👉Mindfulness and Single-Tasking: Monastic practices like meditation emphasized being present in the moment. This focus translates beautifully to our modern world. By embracing single-tasking and avoiding distractions, we can significantly boost our productivity. 👉The Importance of Community: Monasteries fostered a strong sense of community, providing support and accountability. Building connections with colleagues can create a more positive work environment and enhance motivation. 👉Finding Meaning in Work: Monks viewed their work as a form of worship, imbuing it with meaning and purpose. Connecting your work to a larger goal can increase engagement and satisfaction, leading to greater productivity. Think about it for a minute, how can you implement better structure into your workday? What techniques do you currently use to stay focused and avoid distractions? How can you use these tips to improve your focus and avoid those distractions? These practices may seem simple, but their impact is profound. By incorporating a touch of monastic mindfulness into your daily routine, you can create a more focused, productive, and fulfilling day. 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗠𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗟𝗶𝘀𝘁𝘀 𝘁𝗌 𝗕𝗌𝗌𝘀𝘁 𝗬𝗌𝘂𝗿 𝗣𝗿𝗌𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆 Can scribbling things down mindlessly actually boost your focus and efficiency? Today, we’re giving you a surprising productivity hack: the mindless list. Yes, you heard that right! We’re looking at the science behind this strategy, 4 benefits of making a mindless list and the playbook how to do it. A recent study published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology titled "The Pen Is Mightier Than the Mind: Reducing Cognitive Load Through Physical List-Making" suggests a powerful link between list-making and cognitive ease. Researchers found that writing down tasks, even mundane ones, and whatever other thoughts come to mind while doing it, frees up mental space and reduces cognitive load. This, in turn, improves focus, memory, and overall productivity. 𝗊𝗌, 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗟𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝘀 𝗮 "𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁"? It's not about creating a meticulous project plan unless that comes to mind while doing it. And “mindless” doesn’t necessarily mean “not important”. This exercise is about jotting down anything that occupies your mental space, from errands to chores, to-do items, or even random thoughts. By externalizing these mental burdens, you create clarity and free your mind to tackle more demanding tasks. 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝟰 𝗯𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗳𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝘆𝗌𝘂 𝗎𝗲𝘁 𝗳𝗿𝗌𝗺 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗎 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁𝘀: 👉Reduced Stress: Mindless lists help you offload anxieties and gain a sense of control. Seeing tasks written down can ease stress and improve your overall well-being. 👉Improved Focus: By clearing your mental RAM, you free up attention for deep work. No more bouncing between thoughts – the list holds them for later now you don’t have to stress about remembering them and this, allows you to focus on the task at hand. 👉Enhanced Memory: We all forget things. Mindless lists act as external reminders, boosting your memory and preventing missed tasks. 👉Motivation Boost: Crossing off items, even small ones, is surprisingly satisfying and will give you a dopamine boost. This sense of accomplishment fuels motivation and propels you forward. 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲’𝘀 𝗵𝗌𝘄 𝘁𝗌 𝗱𝗌 𝘀𝗌𝗺𝗲 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝗞𝗶𝗻𝗎  At the onset of feeling overwhelmed or not being able to concentrate because of what seems like 100 things you have to do that are racing through your mind. STOP Get out your notebook, or if it’s not with you, get a scrap piece of paper and start writing a list of things you’re thinking about that you have to do. Writing in your own handwriting is recommended, but if you’re a digital person make a list in your notes app or whatever you use. To prevent that onset of anxiety that hits the best of us, each morning before you open that email, text or get rolling with your work, if you haven’t already, jot down what is on your mind. If you already have a list, review it. Just this simple exercise will help you get started on the right foot each day. Put this exercise to work today. You’ll surprise yourself how much better mindless list making makes you feel. Your move. 𝗛𝗌𝘄 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗛𝗌𝘂𝗿𝘀 𝗔 𝗪𝗲𝗲𝗞 𝗊𝗵𝗌𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗬𝗌𝘂 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗕𝗲 𝗪𝗌𝗿𝗞𝗶𝗻𝗎? Today's question plagues office workers, remote workers and digital nomads alike: how many hours should you really be working? Is the standard 40-hour week a productivity sweet spot, or a relic of the industrial age? Today we're diving into the research to reveal the optimal workweek schedule for maximum output and well-being and then giving you 5 tips on how to make sure that you’re working the right number of hours. First , let’s start by ditching the assumption that more hours equals getting more done. Recent research published in the Journal of Applied Psychology titled "Dose-Response Effects of Work Hours on Employee Outcomes" challenges this idea. Researchers tracked nearly 50,000 workers and found a U-shaped relationship between work hours and productivity. What this means is that scientists found that productivity actually decreases after 50 hours a week. Even worse, they found that skipping that full day off can negatively impact your hourly output. So, over 50 hours seems like a hard "no" but is there a magic number for peak performance below that? While there's no one-size-fits-all answer, studies and experts point towards a sweet spot between 35 and 45 hours for optimal productivity. Keep in mind that this is actual hours worked, not how many hours you were “in the office” or “in front of your computer”. This is actual work. Individual factors like your job type, personality, and energy levels play a crucial role in figuring out the right amount of hours for you. A short task type job might thrive in shorter bursts, while a writer, software engineer, or accountant might excel in longer, focused stretches. So, how do you unlock your working hours per week sweet spot? Follow these 5 things
👉Track your time: Become aware of how you actually spend your work hours. Are you in a constant state of busyness, or are there stretches of unproductive distractions? Tracking your time reveals hidden patterns and potential for improvement. 👉Prioritize ruthlessly: Not all tasks are created equal. Identify your most critical tasks and projects, and ruthlessly filter out the rest. Delegate, automate, or simply say no to what doesn't contribute to your core goals. 👉Embrace focused work: Multitasking is one of the biggest productivity killers. Instead, block out dedicated time for deep work sessions, free from distractions, to maximize your output and minimize mental fatigue. 👉Listen to your body and mind: Are you an early bird or a night owl? Experiment with your most productive times and schedule demanding tasks accordingly. Pay attention to your energy levels, lean in when they’re high to take advantage of the moment, and take breaks when you’re running low and need a short rest. 👉Experiment and iterate: There's no magic formula, so don't be afraid to experiment with different workweeks, schedules, and techniques. Find what works best for you and monitor yourself to make sure you’re in your sweet spot. Remember: Productivity isn't just about squeezing in more hours, it's about working smarter. By prioritizing, focusing, and respecting your energy needs, you can create a workweek that fuels your output, nourishes your well-being, and gets more done than you ever thought possible. Your move! You're not alone; we’re living in a wild world, and life and work can get crazy sometimes, taking a toll on your mental and physical well-being. Today, we’re talking about research that discovered a six-stage recovery process to bounce back from burnout and reclaim yourself and your productive mojo. 𝗔 𝗊𝘁𝘂𝗱𝘆 𝗧𝗶𝘁𝗹𝗲𝗱: "𝗔 𝗊𝘁𝘂𝗱𝘆 𝗌𝗳 𝗖𝗌𝗜𝗶𝗻𝗎" This study, titled A Study of Coping: Successful recovery from severe burnout and other reactions to severe work-related stress, published in the Journal of Occupational and Organizational Psychology, explores the experiences of workers who successfully recovered from severe burnout caused by work-related stress. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗌𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗣𝗿𝗌𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗊𝘁𝗮𝗎𝗲𝘀: 👉Admit the problem – Recognize that you have the signs and symptoms of burnout. 👉Distance yourself from work – Take some time away from work demands. 👉Start Restoring your health – Focus on physical and mental well-being. 👉Question your values – Re-evaluate work priorities and career goals. 👉Explore work possibilities – Consider changes in your work environment. 👉Make objective changes – Implement concrete steps to address the root causes of burnout. Sometimes burnout creeps up on you just when you think you have it all together. The key to the recovery process is self-awareness, honesty about what’s happening, and taking action to address the root causes of the stress to make changes. You can do this. Your move. 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗚𝗻𝗰𝗌𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗧𝗵𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗪𝗌𝗿𝗱𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗠𝗌𝘀𝘁 𝗊𝘂𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗣𝗿𝗌𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗣𝗲𝗌𝗜𝗹𝗲 𝗚𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗠𝗌𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗊𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗌 𝗊𝗮𝘆 Ever said something you instantly regretted? We've all been there. But what separates the high achievers, the super productive folks, from the rest in these moments? It's not the mistake itself, but three words. Today we’re talking about why these three words elevate you and how people see you, what the research says and how to do it correctly because it’s not just as simple as saying the three words. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗧𝗵𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗪𝗌𝗿𝗱𝘀: 𝗜 𝗪𝗮𝘀 𝗪𝗿𝗌𝗻𝗎 I was wrong
and here’s the thing, saying those three words unlocks a super power. Let me explain
"I was wrong" not only empowers you to learn and grow, but also makes you appear smarter, more communal, and downright friendly in the eyes of others. 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗊𝘂𝗜𝗜𝗌𝗿𝘁: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝟮𝟬𝟭𝟵 𝗊𝘁𝘂𝗱𝘆 A 2019 study titled "On the willingness to admit wrongness" investigated how people perceive those who acknowledge their mistakes. Researchers created scenarios where individuals either owned up to being wrong or stuck to their guns. Guess what? The folks who said "I was wrong" weren't judged as any less competent. In fact, the researchers found they were actually seen as more intelligent, more cooperative, and more likable. 𝗣𝗌𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗲𝗜𝘁𝗶𝗌𝗻 𝗊𝗵𝗶𝗳𝘁 Why the positive perception shift? Admitting error taps into our fundamental need for connection. It shows humility, a willingness to learn, and a respect for others' perspectives. It essentially says, "Hey, I'm human, I mess up, but I'm also open to growing." That kind of vulnerability fosters trust and strengthens relationships. 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗎𝗲 𝗌𝗳 𝗊𝗮𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗎 "𝗜 𝗪𝗮𝘀 𝗪𝗿𝗌𝗻𝗎" Now, saying "I was wrong" isn't always easy. Our egos scream at us to defend, to deflect, to blame the other person. But remember, admitting a mistake doesn't make you a bad person. It makes you a person who takes responsibility, who values growth over pride, and who understands that even the highest achievers are, well, still human. 𝗧𝗿𝘂𝗲 𝗔𝗰𝗞𝗻𝗌𝘄𝗹𝗲𝗱𝗎𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 Here’s a key element, you just can’t say it, you actually need to genuinely mean you’re sorry because as it turns out humans can tell when you’re just doing it for effect. I’m sure you’ve witnessed it. So the next time you trip up, whether it's a work blunder or a social misstep, take a deep breath and embrace the power of "I was wrong." You’ll surprise yourself with the positive ripple effect it creates in yourself and how people perceive you. Your move. You’re not alone; for the most part, the Internet Browser has remained the same: tabs, like a ton of them, across the top, the URL bar at the top, and some themes to make it feel customized to you. That’s if you can figure out how to even change the theme in the first place. Today, I’m introducing you to the ARC browser, a refreshing new approach to browsing the web. And before you say, Brandon, I’m not switching my browser and hit the next button, give me a few minutes to explain; you’ll be glad you did because I had that reaction at first when I heard about ARC. ARC was released to the public in April 2022 after months of beta release. I was in the Beta, used it, and honestly didn’t give it a fair shake. ARC was designed from the ground up. It took me about 20 minutes to get used to it, and then it got better and better over the following days. It’s full of big new ideas about how we should interact with the web — and it’s right about it most of the time. 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗮𝗰𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗊𝗜𝗲𝗲𝗱 Let’s start with privacy: they don’t track what you search for or what sites you visit. On top of that, it’s fast. 𝗙𝗲𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲𝘀 𝗜 𝗟𝗌𝘃𝗲 Navigation, aka tabs, are on the left-hand side of the page and are fully customizable. It has spaces for your personal and work environments. All are easy to access with a swipe. It has built-in AI, so it’s not your typical command F to find something on the page, you can ask the AI assistant about anything about the page, summarize it, find something, etc. It’s slick and speeds up time finding things on websites. The URL bar is not at the top of the page; don’t shake your head just yet. It’s out of the way on the right side of the page, so when you’re on a website, you get to experience the whole website much better because you have more height in your browser. I didn’t think it would make a big difference, but it does. Split screen. Sometimes, I want to work on two screens, cutting and pasting or referencing an article while I write. Arc makes it easy. You can even do three windows if your monitor is large enough. Arc is built on the Chrome backbone, so if you’re using Chrome plug-ins, you can use them with Arc with ease. Download ARC at Arc.net and give it a good, honest try; you’ll be glad you did. Your move. 𝗝𝗌𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗶 𝗪𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗌𝘄: 𝗔 𝗧𝗌𝗌𝗹 𝗳𝗌𝗿 𝗊𝗲𝗹𝗳-𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗌𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗺𝘄𝗌𝗿𝗞 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝗊𝘂𝗿𝗜𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗎 𝗛𝗌𝘄 𝗠𝘂𝗰𝗵 𝗜𝘁 𝗜𝗺𝗜𝗿𝗌𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝗬𝗌𝘂 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗬𝗌𝘂𝗿 𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗺 Has someone ever used a word to describe you that surprised you because you didn’t realize that was how others see you? Today, we're exploring the Johari Window, a powerful tool for self-reflection and building stronger teams. We’ll explain what the Johari Window is, the benefits, and then how it works with directions with the five steps on how to use it correctly. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗝𝗌𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗶 𝗪𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗌𝘄? The Johari Window is a simple yet insightful exercise that helps you discover hidden aspects about yourself and how others perceive you. It was developed in 1955 by American psychologists Joseph Luft and Harry Ingham with the idea to enhance the individual’s perception of others. This model is based on two ideas: the first idea, trust can be acquired by revealing information about you to others; and the second idea, you can learn a lot about yourself from others' feedback. The name ‘Johari’ comes from joining the founders' first two names. The model is also known as the feedback/disclosure model of self-awareness in case you hear that name used somewhere else. 𝗛𝗌𝘄 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗝𝗌𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗶 𝗪𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗌𝘄 𝗪𝗌𝗿𝗞𝘀 Imagine a window with four panes. Open Pane: Traits both you and your team see in yourself – these are a strong indicator of clear communication and understanding within the team. Hidden Pane: Qualities you see in yourself that others miss. Maybe you're a great listener who needs to create more space for others to speak up in meetings. Blind Spot: Strengths your team recognizes that you don't. This can be an opportunity for growth, like colleagues perceiving you as idealistic, encouraging you to back your ideas with data. Unknown Pane: It has undiscovered potential. Identify these qualities and explore how to develop them. 𝗕𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗳𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗌𝗳 𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗎 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗝𝗌𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗶 𝗪𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗌𝘄 Increased Self-Awareness: You gain a better understanding of how you're perceived by colleagues. Stronger Relationships: Build trust and connection based on shared understanding. Improved Communication: Approach interactions with valuable context from the Johari Window insights. Personal Growth: Address blind spots and cultivate strengths identified by your team. Effective Feedback: Learn how to accept and utilize constructive criticism. 𝗛𝗌𝘄 𝘁𝗌 𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗝𝗌𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗶 𝗪𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗌𝘄: 𝟱 𝗊𝘁𝗲𝗜𝘀 Gather a List of Adjectives describing personality traits. You can easily Google or use AI with ChatGPT, Cluse, or Gemini. Your Self-Assessment: Choose 5-6 adjectives that best describe you in a work setting. The Team Assessment: Have colleagues anonymously choose adjectives for you. Mapping the Window: Categorize all adjectives into the Johari Window quadrants. Discussion: Openly discuss why certain traits landed where they did. Have someone designed as the moderator to ensure feedback is delivered positively and coach people not to be defensive. Do this exercise once every 8-12 months as a refresher and to incorporate new team members. The Johari Window is a valuable tool for personal and team development. By understanding yourself and your teammates and how you're perceived, you’ll build a stronger, more successful team. Your move. 𝗡𝗶𝗎𝗵𝘁𝗰𝗮𝗜 𝗡𝗶𝗎𝗵𝘁𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗲: 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗬𝗌𝘂 𝗪𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗌 𝗊𝗮𝘆 𝗡𝗌 𝘁𝗌 𝗔𝗹𝗰𝗌𝗵𝗌𝗹 𝗕𝗲𝗳𝗌𝗿𝗲 𝗕𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝟳 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵𝘆 𝗔𝗹𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗪𝗌𝗿𝗞 You know the feeling: you’ve had a long day, you unwind with a glass of wine or other spirit and drift off peacefully, right?! Today we’re looking at the effect of nightcaps, what the research says, and then giving you 7 great alternatives to assure you’re your most productive self the next day. A study published in the journal "Sleep" found that even moderate alcohol consumption before bed disrupts sleep quality. Subjects who had a drink before sleep experienced: 👉Reduced REM sleep: This isn’t good because REM sleep is a critical sleep stage that is essential for your memory consolidation and learning. 👉And on top of that, had more fragmented sleep: Meaning subjects were waking up throughout the night and experiencing sleep deprivation. This led to feeling less rested and fatigued in the morning. Turns out that nightcap you were hoping to lull you to sleep is likely leaving you feeling foggy and sluggish the next day. This can significantly impact your attitude, productivity, and health over the long run. It’s no secret that studies show sleep deprivation leads to: 👉Decreased focus and concentration. 👉Impaired decision-making. 👉Reduced creativity and problem-solving abilities. 👉Accelerated aging of skin which makes you look older. Alright, so how do you ditch the nightcap and prioritize a good night's sleep for a productive day? Here are some great alternatives to replace that nightcap: 👉Have a relaxing bath with calming essential oils. 👉Read a book in bed. 👉Do some gentle stretching. Yea I know it’s physical activity, but trust me, it works better than that nightcap. 👉Do some moderate exercise or a yoga routine for 20 minutes. 👉Have a sauna. A 15-20 minute sauna with a cool shower will have you sleeping like a baby. 👉Listen to calming music, white noise or even a podcast. Set the timer so it turns off automatically and doesn’t wake you up. Spotify has a timer if you’re looking for one to listen to a podcast player. 👉Do some meditation or mindfulness exercises. There are tons of apps that will walk you through a 10-15 minute meditation that will ease your mind and have you nodding off before you know it. Saying no to a nightcap can be a powerful yes to better sleep, improved focus, and a more productive you. Give these alternatives a try, you’ll be glad you did. Your move. Today we’re giving you 7 really good Prompts to get you started using AI so you can see what it can do to help you increase your productivity. 𝗔𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝟭: 𝗊𝗜𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰 𝗣𝗿𝗌𝗺𝗜𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗔𝗱𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 The key to using prompts is that the more specific you are, the better results you are going to get. Also, the AI tools now remember previous results so if you get a result that isn’t quite what you want you can tell the AI to adjust however you want. For example, if you wanted something to be more specific about something you can tell it to redo it giving you more specifics about X. For the sake of time I’m giving you four of the 7 prompts. And don’t worry about trying to remember them or writing them down. I put them in a free download PDF. The link is in the show notes. In it you get the four we go over here and three more. 𝗔𝗰𝘁 𝗮𝘀 𝗮  𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗖𝗌𝘂𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗌𝗿 I want you to act as a career counselor. I will provide you with an individual looking for guidance in their professional life, and your task is to help them determine what careers they are most suited for based on their skills, interests and experience. You should also conduct research into the various options available, explain the job market trends in different industries and advise on which qualifications would be beneficial for pursuing particular fields. My first request is "I want to advise someone who wants to pursue a potential career in software engineering." 𝗔𝗰𝘁 𝗮𝘀 𝗮  𝗧𝗶𝘁𝗹𝗲 𝗚𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗌𝗿 I want you to act as a fancy title generator. I will type keywords via comma and you will reply with fancy titles. My first keywords are: ______________________ 𝗔𝗰𝘁 𝗮𝘀 𝗮𝗻  𝗔𝗱𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗿 I want you to act as an advertiser. You will create a campaign to promote a product or service of your choice. You will choose a target audience, develop key messages and slogans, select the media channels for promotion, and decide on any additional activities needed to reach your goals. My first suggestion request is "I need help creating an advertising campaign for a new type of energy drink targeting young adults aged 18-30." 𝗔𝗰𝘁 𝗮𝘀 𝗮  𝗊𝘁𝗌𝗿𝘆𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗿 I want you to act as a storyteller. You will come up with entertaining stories that are engaging, imaginative and captivating for the audience. It can be fairy tales, educational stories or any other type of stories which have the potential to capture people's attention and imagination. Depending on the target audience, you may choose specific themes or topics for your storytelling session e.g., if it’s children then you can talk about animals; If it's adults then history-based tales might engage them better etc. My first request is "I need an interesting story on perseverance." You can get these four and three more examples in the free download PDF from the link in the show notes. 𝗥𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿 And remember, you can replace topics, subjects etc., in place of these prompts. They are meant to give you a good starting place. Give AI a try, you’ll be amazed at how it can help you be more productive in all areas of your daily life at home and at work. 𝗬𝗌𝘂𝗿 𝗺𝗌𝘃𝗲. 𝐀𝐈 𝐅𝐚𝐜𝐞-𝐎𝐟𝐟: 𝐂𝐥𝐚𝐮𝐝𝐞 𝐯𝐬. 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐭𝐆𝐏𝐓 𝐯𝐬. 𝐆𝐞𝐊𝐢𝐧𝐢 We’re diving into the world of large language models otherwise known as LLMs – those super-powered AI tools that can generate text, translate languages, create images and videos and answer your questions in crazy detail. But with so many options, which AI tool is right for you? Today we’re comparing Claude, ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini We’ll give you the strengths and weaknesses of each one, give you the best uses cases for each one and then tell you the winner. Here we go
𝐂𝐥𝐚𝐮𝐝𝐞 𝐛𝐲 𝐀𝐧𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐚𝐩𝐢𝐜’𝐬 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐭𝐡𝐬: Known for its factual accuracy, reducing bias and really good writing. It’s Great for tasks requiring reliable information. 𝐂𝐥𝐚𝐮𝐝𝐞 𝐖𝐞𝐚𝐀𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐬: Still under development, so access is be limited to current information on the internet, meaning the model is trained on older data, and it can be overly cautious in its responses sometimes. 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐭𝐆𝐏𝐓 𝐛𝐲 𝐎𝐩𝐞𝐧 𝐀𝐈 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐭𝐡𝐬: It’s a creative powerhouse, excelling at generating different writing styles based on your prompts, giving you ideas to spark creative ideas and producing overall engaging content. 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐭𝐆𝐏𝐓 𝐖𝐞𝐚𝐀𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐬: Prone to factual errors and occasional biases. It can also sometimes get carried away with creative embellishments so you can’t always trust the answers are based on facts. 𝐆𝐚𝐚𝐠𝐥𝐞’ 𝐆𝐞𝐊𝐢𝐧𝐢 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐭𝐡𝐬: Stands out for its factual language understanding and ability to answer complex questions in an informative way. Big plus, it’s connected to the Internet so you can ask it current event questions and have it incorporate that information into answers. It also has access to academic journals so it can help you find studies and other factual information. 𝐆𝐞𝐊𝐢𝐧𝐢 𝐰𝐞𝐚𝐀𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐬: Lacks the strong creative writing capabilities and might struggle with informal language or humor. 𝐁𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐔𝐬𝐞 𝐂𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐬 𝐂𝐥𝐚𝐮𝐝𝐞: When good writing matters, summarizing factual topics and tasks requiring high accuracy. 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐭𝐆𝐏𝐓: Brainstorming creative ideas, writing different content formats (scripts, poems, humor etc) and sparking inspiration. 𝐆𝐞𝐊𝐢𝐧𝐢: Great for Answering complex questions, understanding technical concepts and Research and when you want or need to access current information. So, the winner? It depends, I use all three! Claude for good writing, ChatGPT for creativity, and Gemini for factual understanding. Overall I find myself using Gemini because I’ve gotten good at the prompts for it, I do a lot of research and I like that it knows current information on the internet. Having said that, the world of AI is moving really fast and these companies are releasing new versions almost weekly so every once in a while copy your prompt into the others and compare the answers. A study titled "The Effects of Canine Companions on Employee Stress and Social Interaction in the Workplace" published in the "International Journal of Workplace Health Management" (2017) investigated the impact of canine companions on employee stress and social interaction. Their findings showed that employees who brought their dogs to work experienced: -𝗥𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝘀: Physiological markers of stress, like cortisol levels, were lower in employees with dogs compared to those without. -𝗜𝗺𝗜𝗿𝗌𝘃𝗲𝗱 𝗺𝗌𝗌𝗱: Employees with dogs reported feeling happier and more relaxed throughout the workday. -𝗜𝗻𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝗌𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗌𝗻: Dogs acted as social catalysts, fostering conversations and connections between colleagues. All of these effects translated to better focus and concentration, leading to a boost in productivity. While this study focused on dogs, other studies focused on the broader category of pets mirror these findings. Besides reducing stress, improving your mood, and sparking conversations, having your BFF at work will force you to get up and move to take them out to potty. That means more fresh air, sun, and fun for you. Some tips to working with your best friend around: Working from home and having your dog, cat, or other pet around is pretty easy. If you’re thinking of bringing your furry friend to the office? Consider these tips: 𝗣𝗌𝘁𝘁𝘆 𝗕𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗞𝘀: Ensure your workplace has a place to walk your dog. Not everyone loves dogs. Make sure your pet is friendly and well-behaved. If your dog barks, you might want to reconsider bringing them to the office until you can train them not to do it. As the research suggests, having your pet around you while you work is a win-win for your productivity and your well-being. 𝗬𝗌𝘂𝗿 𝗺𝗌𝘃𝗲. Bullet 3: Here Are The Risks/Blockers (If Any): Are you facing any roadblocks or potential risks? Briefly mention them and propose solutions. Bullet 4: If Given More Time, I'd Do This Do you need further resources or time to complete the task? If yes, Let the recipient know what additional support you need, if no let them know it’s complete and where to find it if it’s on a drive or attached to the email. This clear, concise structure ensures everyone's informed and avoids unnecessary back-and-forth emails and there is research to show brevity boosts productivity AND there’s research to support this, a study titled "The Attention Inbox: Towards Reducing Email Information Overload" Published in: Proceedings of the SIGCHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems (2004) (chi2022.acm.org/) investigated the impact of email overload on information processing and task completion. The findings showed that participants spent a significant amount of time searching for and reading lengthy emails.
