Speaker @CBlazejewski was presented the Government Service Award today at the Direct Support Professionals Celebration held by the @CPNRI. He was honored on behalf of the legislature for the passage of a state budget that included full funding of rate increases for human services this year, helping Rhode Islanders with developmental disabilities and the professionals who support them. He was joined by @TinaSpearsRI and @Justine4RI and @AlanaDimario and @bridget4Valverde.

Legislation sponsored by @BrandonPotterRI and @SenatorCiccone was ceremonially signed into law today, protecting Rhode Islanders’ constitutional rights by creating a state-level right to sue federal officers who violate them.
The law was ceremonially signed by Gov. Dan McKee today at an event at @dii_of_ri.
“Under the Trump administration, federal officials have invaded our states and blatantly disregarded the constitutional rights of the citizens whose communities they have occupied. These abuses are only growing more brazen. This federal government will not police itself, so individual Rhode Islanders need a defense in state courts to protect their constitutional rights, which is exactly what this legislation provides,” said Rep. Potter. “For too long, federal officials have enjoyed broad immunity against lawsuits in federal court, a deficiency in our legal system that this lawless administration has made heartbreakingly clear. It’s time for states to step up to their residents’ defense, starting with Rhode Island.”

A new law introduced by @JoshuaJGiraldo and @anastatesenate2 that keeps Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents away from polling places was ceremonially signed into law today by Gov. Dan McKee at @dii_of_ri.
“This law protects the integrity of our elections by ensuring that every eligible Rhode Island voter can exercise their right to vote free from intimidation,” said Rep. Giraldo. “It creates a 200-foot buffer to prevent the presence of federal immigration officials at or near public polling locations in a way that could chill election participation. As the son of a Colombian immigrant, I can tell you first-hand that the presence of ICE vehicles or personnel absolutely will intimidate first-generation immigrants — naturalized citizens and lawful voters. This is particularly true in communities such as Central Falls, which I represent, that have a large population of immigrants.”

Legislation introduced by @LeonelaFelixRI and @MrAcostruth that revises the state’s definitions of felonies, misdemeanors and petty misdemeanors to close a loophole that allowed lawful permanent residents and other noncitizens to be deported for minor, non-violent offenses was ceremonially signed into law today.
“Reducing a maximum sentence by a single day may seem like a small change, but for many Rhode Island families it can mean the difference between staying together and being torn apart,” said Rep. Felix. “Under federal immigration law, a low-level offense carrying a potential one-year sentence can trigger severe immigration consequences, including deportation, even when no jail time is imposed. This bill closes that loophole for minor, nonviolent offenses while preserving appropriate penalties for serious crimes. A lawful permanent resident who has lived, worked, paid taxes, and raised a family in Rhode Island for decades should not face deportation because of a technicality in our sentencing laws. This legislation brings greater fairness and proportionality to our justice system.”

As a mother, I know how important it is for families to trust that young people and vulnerable Rhode Islanders are safe when they seek help.
AI is moving quickly, and our safeguards need to keep up. This new law puts needed guardrails in place.
Human oversight matters.
Two bills from @TinaSpearsRI and @LoriUrsoRI to create artificial intelligence safety guidelines related to suicidal ideation and mental health treatment have been signed into law. The bills are part of the Senate’s 17-bill package of healthcare legislation.
“AI chatbots are a new kind of technology that provide an experience that to many users feels like speaking to a friend or a therapist. But chatbots aren’t human and they do not live up to the professional standards of a trained therapist,” said Rep. Spears. “This legislation puts up necessary guardrails to protect the users of chatbots, because, as we have seen in too many tragic instances, the products are not currently equipped to deal with users experiencing a crisis in a safe and responsible manner. Whether at home or in a clinical setting, human oversight and thoughtful safety regulation are necessary to keep Rhode Islanders safe from a growing and untested technology.”
In written testimony submitted in support of the bill, @FamilyServiceRI, which provides behavioral health and social services across the state, wrote “an over-dependence on AI to guide clinical treatment can result in errant decision-making and harmful outcomes in client care. We fully support the implementation of regulations regarding the use of AI in mental healthcare treatments to ensure all clients are properly informed of the details and the specific purpose for the use of AI in their treatment.”

On the last night of the 2026 legislative session, the House said farewell to members who won't be returning next year.
@BrandonPotterRI paid tribute to Rep. David Morales and introduced a resolution in his honor: webserver.rilegislature.gov/…
Rep. Morales was first elected to the House in 2020 to serve the people of District 7 in Providence's Mount Pleasant, Valley, and Elmhurst neighborhoods. He was raised by a single immigrant mother in the rural town of Soledad, CA, alongside his older sister. He graduated from Soledad High School in 2016 and two years later he graduated from the University of California Irvine with a bachelor's in urban studies. In 2019, at age 20, Rep. Morales became the youngest graduate in the history of the Brown University Public Affairs master's program.

What does this even mean?
Trump should be immediately removed from office via the 25th Amendment, or impeached.
It should not be difficult for the leader of House Democrats to state the obvious in plain and simple terms.

Many of us in the @RIHouseofReps and @RISenate wore green tonight at @GovDanMcKee’s State of the State to show our support for making the top 1% pay their fair share.
Very disappointing to hear no mention of it at all. There is no “Affordability for All” without #TaxTheRich

Congratulations to one of Rhode Island's newest attorneys, @BrandonPotterRI!
Rep. Potter was sworn into the Rhode Island Bar by Justice Maureen McKenna Goldberg in a ceremony attended by several of his colleagues, including Speaker @JoeShekarchi, who moved his admission, @CBlazejewski, @repkazarian, and @jfbatista12.
Today @GovDanMcKee signed new healthcare reforms into law, including my bill ending prior authorization for PCPs. With RI’s doctor shortage, we need doctors treating patients, not battling insurance companies. One more small step toward the healthcare system we all deserve.
Apparently taxing the top 1% isn't what drives out businesses after all @ProvChamber

Democrats, this isn’t it.
Even good-hearted, smart, reasonable people make mistakes. Rubbing it in with a “told ya so” is not how we move forward, and this kind of arrogance is a big part of why we’ve lost. Let’s show some grace.
6000 people in Cranston & Warwick again without power from yet another outage—the third time in a month.
Rhode Island Energy seriously needs to get their act together and ratepayers need to be compensated. This is unacceptable.
Very disappointed to see @MayorKenHopkins attack a well-respected judge with such an ignorant, reckless, and false claim. Judge Isherwood—appointed by a Republican—was simply doing his job and applying the law as written. The Mayor should retract this statement and apologize.
Here at the @RIHouseofReps with Rep. Scott Slater, where we just passed a new budget that finally puts our Safe Staffing law into effect & directs 100% of new funding to our nursing home frontline workers. Honored to work alongside such a staunch advocate for our most vulnerable.
