The small community of Latin Americanists has been arguing for 2 years about whether it's a "right-wing wave" or an "anti-incumbent wave" and huh I guess we were all wrong tonight eh
Flávio declines to recognize the result, says he will ask for election to be annulled. Improbable, but signals weeks/months/??? of tension ahead. The Bolsonaros will have biggest bloc in Senate, allied governors and possibly White House in their corner
It was the turnout, stupid.
3 million more people voted in 2nd round than 1st. Only 3.2% of all voters spoiled their ballots, lowest percentage in a 2nd round this century

Lula wins, and it wasn’t particularly close — 3.5% or more than 4 million votes.
It’s an epic comeback and we will need time to fully understand it. But one thing is clear — the extension in voting hours was not the difference maker in this race.
Yes, it’s correct — the Supreme Court judge who unilaterally ordered some polls to stay open 2 extra hours was previously Lula’s personal lawyer
To give you a small idea of the chaos: At São Paulo’s biggest voting station (PUC), some voting machines were closed for the night, while some still open. If you were assigned a closed machine, you cannot vote. That’s in SÃO PAULO. Expect massive legal challenges nationwide. Nobody knows what happens next
Brazil. Could be a long, tense night — or longer. Both sides alleging irregularities / problems. Single Supreme Court judge ordered 2 hour extension in voting, but some stations closed anyway. I have sources on both sides talking about legal challenges. Sorry to say, looking like another step in the americanização of Brazilian politics
