Most UK residents will not be able to bring a foreign partner to the country under the new rules. Available data suggests that around 50% of UK employees earn less than the £29,000 threshold and 70% earn less than £38,700.

The answer does not fully address the concern of the nearly 40k people who have signed the petition against the MIR increase. We still don’t know the timing of the implementation of the staggered increases, nor how the savings route will change.

We are astonished to see the UK government take such punishing action against UK citizens with non-British family members. It effectively strips a key citizenship right - the right to return to live in the UK - from UK overseas with non-UK family members. We will oppose this.
