“Give me a minute,” Maggie said, already backing away, her voice tight with urgency. “I need my gear.”
She didn’t wait for a response. Turning sharply, she broke into a run toward the prison, boots pounding against the ground.
“I’ll meet you at the gates.”
She hadn’t expected him to come with her on this run. Not out there. Not beyond the prison walls. But now that he had, the knot in her chest loosened just a little. Whatever waited beyond those gates didn’t feel quite as certain to kill them both.
