Strasbourg Cathedral is a remarkable record of how architecture evolved across generations. Construction of the present cathedral developed from earlier Romanesque work into a predominantly Gothic masterpiece. Work on the western façade began in 1277, and its famous openwork spire was completed in 1439, reaching 142 metres. What fascinates me most is the contrast between the massive stone structure and the delicate, lace-like tracery of the spire. Medieval builders transformed heavy sandstone into something that appears almost weightless. The cathedral remained the tallest building in the world for centuries, until the Washington Monument surpassed it in 1884. Its construction was not the work of a single architect or generation. It reflects centuries of changing designs, craftsmanship, ambition, and restoration. One important detail: the coloured construction phases in this illustration are a simplified visual guide, not a definitive dating of every individual stone or architectural feature. For me, Strasbourg Cathedral demonstrates that great architecture is rarely created in one moment. It is built layer by layer, by people whose names history may never remember.
