Four years into my coffee‑farming journey, I am thankful to be peacefully picking from a garden that endured the harsh drought. Now that the rains have returned, the trees are responding well, and more ripening is on the way. It is a rewarding season.

When #breeding ignores these gender differentiated preferences, even high yielding varieties risk low adoption. By capturing specific traits prioritized by both men & women farmers early in the research pipeline, we ensure new banana releases are market ready & farmer preferred.
What makes a great #banana variety? Farmers in Luweero District shared their lived experiences on market demands, agronomic challenges, & ideal crop traits during our recent Focus Group Discussion survey pretest. Aligning #Gender responsive research to crop traits & user needs.

DID YOU KNOW? Before applying mulch in the coffee garden: weed around the tree; don't pile mulch directly against the coffee stem (to reduce the risk of diseases+pests); don't use one type of material repeatedly. A mixture of materials decompose at different rates.#COCODEVProject

FARM FIELD DAY: Mr. Joacham Andama, the Farmer Manager of @BulindiZ guides farmers on effective selection of the plantation site for coffee farm. Andama guides farmers that a coffee farm is set up on loam soils,by first clearing the bush and following a spacing of 3mx 3m for high crop yields. He says other farmers are reducing the spacing to 2.5m which is not effective, because it increases competition due to higher numbers of the coffee trees.@MAAIF_Uganda @narouganda @NARO_NaCRRI

BUNYORO-KITARA KINGDOM, NARO TRAIN 200 FARMERS ON COFFEE GROWING Bunyoro-Kitara Kingdom (BKK), in partnership with the National Agricultural Research Organisation (@narouganda ), has trained more than 200 farmers on coffee growing and management at the Bunyoro-Kitara Kingdom Coffee Technology Demonstration Garden in Musaijamukuru, Kikuube District. The first group of farmers, drawn from Musaijamukuru East, Musaijamukuru West and Ruhunga parishes, was trained by agricultural experts from @BulindiZ and the Ministry of Agriculture on garden preparation, digging coffee holes, spacing, suitable coffee varieties, and proper maintenance of coffee. The Bunyoro-Kitara Kingdom Chief Administrative Secretary, Omuny. Alex Katusabe Abbooki, represented the Kingdom Prime Minister, Owek. Andrew Byakutaga Ateenyi. While delivering the Prime Minister's remarks, Katusabe thanked the Director of NARO Bulindi, Mr. Moses Mwesigwa, the technical teams from NARO and the Ministry of Agriculture, local leaders and Kingdom chiefs for supporting the first training at the demonstration garden. He said BKK started its coffee-growing campaign in 2023 as a major cash-crop initiative aimed at improving people's livelihoods and enabling families to earn sufficient income to support their needs. Katusabe said the demonstration garden is open to the community, organisations, agencies and local governments to learn and train farmers in the best coffee-growing practices. He urged the 200 participants to apply the skills acquired and share them with other farmers, contributing to the Kingdom's *Eka Ekwesimisa (Desired Household Model)*, where households have enough food and income to support health, education and livelihoods. He reported that BKK has so far established three demonstration gardens in Musaijamukuru, Isunga-Kagadi and Bujenje, with more being prepared in partnership with NARO. Mr. Patrick Kulunda, who represented the Director of NARO Bulindi, commended BKK for being a great partner and congratulated the Prime Minister for making the dream of the demonstration sites a reality. Kulunda said farmers had been trained in preparing gardens, digging and spacing coffee holes, and selecting suitable coffee varieties. He pledged that NARO would continue working with BKK to train more farmers across the Kingdom. Ends – at Hoima, Uganda
