Life has become intelligent enough to recognize the continuity that made its intelligence possible. Your individual existence is temporary. The living lineage that produced you is older than humanity, older than animals, older than almost everything recognizable on Earth’s surface. You were born. But the life from which you emerged has been continuing for billions of years. And for one brief interval in that immense history, it developed the ability to ask where it came from.
