If you want to know why Texas went blue?
Because Abbott and the rest of the government stopped being accountable to the people. They took their constituents for granted. They treated it as a shoe-in one party system.
You saw it when Abbott took an unpopular school voucher system that was rejected time after time, and he shoved it through. Going so far as to help primary Republicans where vouchers made zero sense and hurt their constituents. You could see it in how they got so arrogant that they ditched an incumbent for a guy who every Republican whose worked in politics for a long time has told me is one of the most corrupt politicians in recent history.
Of course, the broader environment, inflation, war, etc. played a huge role. But the absolute arrogance and dismissing of the people is why the once thought to be impossible is now reality.
And that’s a good thing. Politicians should be accountable to their people. There needs to be an incentive to serving those who elected you. That’s how the system works.
1/ How’d we get here? It all starts 100% with vouchers. That’s when rural Texans began to wonder if statewide Republicans really had their best interests at heart. We can all point to that single issue and what the Governor did afterward to his long-time allies.
2/ There’s no question that rural TX became aware that they’re not a priority. Pile on data centers, Trump tariffs, property taxes, fuel costs, inflation, etc. Pro-voucher, statewide Republicans betrayed the truly conservative, Republican reps from rural TX, like me.
1/ Good news for rural Texas health care. After months of delay, the feds approved nearly $12 billion in Medicaid funding for Texas hospitals and providers. Hospitals estimated the stall was costing them $27 million a day. That money now flows. gov.texas.gov/news/post/gove…
3/ More help is on the way. The state plans to award $87 million in Rural Texas Strong grants to 129 rural providers to recruit doctors and EMS, replace aging equipment, and shore up facilities. gov.texas.gov/news/post/gove…
4/ And proud to see @TarletonState leading the way. Tarleton researchers are part of a new NIH-funded study on why rural hospitals close and how to keep care close to home. Rural health is Tarleton’s mission, and Texas is better for it. tarleton.edu/news/nih-funded…
