Human rights and the Tory policies aren’t “party political” they’re inhumane…

Presumably BBC will be asked to explain which of its guidelines were broken and why other regular presenters, contributors, comedians, actors who tweet political views are not in breach. Hard to see Lineker coming back now.
Full @GaryLineker statement.
- BBC considers his social media remarks a breach of guidelines
- BBC told Lineker to step off MoTD duties until agreement on social media use
- Have told Lineker he should keep away from “taking sides” on party political/controversial issues

Personally I'd suggest Gary Lineker for a knighthood but I guess he never broke a woman's nose.

If I was worried about people comparing me to 1930s Germany, my next move probably wouldn't be to shut down all criticism on the national broadcasting service

I handed in my notice at my FOH job & I’ll be sad to leave this lovely team. In the last 5 weeks, 20+ FOH have signed up to join @bectu. I’ve been told this is rare and it’s so important. Improvements happened so quickly when we paid attention to our terms. JOIN YOUR UNION ✊🏼

Our full statement:

ALT Bectu has responded to the BBC’s decision to tell Gary Lineker to step back from Match of the Day. Philippa Childs, Head of Bectu, which represents thousands of BBC workers responding to the suspension of Gary Lineker, said: “This is a deeply concerning decision from the BBC. It will give the appearance that they have bowed to political pressure from ministers to take someone off air for disagreeing with the policies of the current government. “Taken with the ongoing controversy over the appointment of the BBC Chairman, who has a much more important role in upholding the reputation of the BBC, and who has not stepped back while under investigation, it also risks given the impression of double standards on these issues.”

Dear @BBC. In the interests of fairness could you please now ask @Lord_Sugar to step aside from @bbcapprentice . Otherwise people may wonder if you are truly impartial @GaryLineker

Gary Lineker makes a comparison with 1930s’ Germany where dissent is silenced.
And his dissent is silenced.
Don’t watch #MOTD this weekend

This is what a culture war looks like. Where are those freedom of speech advocates when you need them?
This is exactly the sentiment I have. I love the BBC and will fight for a publicly funded neutral broadcaster. Unfortunately the BBC have lost that standing recently. It our fault ultimately that the BBC don’t feel protected that we will stand with them for impartiality.
As a strong supporter of public service broadcasting, I want to be able to defend the BBC. But the decision to take @GaryLineker off air is indefensible. It is undermining free speech in the face of political pressure - & it does always seem to be rightwing pressure it caves to

Labour: “The BBC’s cowardly decision to take Gary Lineker off air is an assault on free speech in the face of political pressure. Tory politicians lobbying to get people sacked for disagreeing with Government policies should be laughed at, not pandered to. BBC should rethink.”
