Working on your Halloween costume?
🎃 Avoid long, trailing fabrics.
🎃 Skip loose, flowy designs.
🎃 Choose flame-resistant materials.
Candles, jack-o’-lanterns, and other open flames can easily ignite costumes. Make sure outfits fit well, don’t drag on the ground, and allow for clear vision and easy movement so everyone can enjoy a safer #Halloween.
🌳 More trees. More shade. Healthier schoolyards.
Nearly 2.6 million California students attend schools where trees cover 5% or less of the areas where they play and spend time outdoors (according to a new EdSource analysis).
We’re helping change that. Since 2022, California has invested more than $156 million through CAL FIRE’s Green Schoolyards program, supporting projects at more than 215 campuses and helping plant thousands of trees in communities across the state.
The goal goes beyond adding shade. Greener schoolyards can reduce extreme heat, create outdoor learning spaces and give students healthier places to learn and play.

Not every wildfire makes the news. Many are stopped before they have a chance to grow.
While California may be experiencing fewer wildfire starts, new fires are still igniting every day.
Over the past week, 157 new wildfires started across the state. CAL FIRE’s goal is to contain 95% of wildfires at 10 acres or less. Meeting that goal takes a fast response and decisive action before flames have a chance to spread.
📸 The Oct. 12 Rock Fire is one example. @CALFIRENEU and partner agencies responded and contained the fire at just 1.5 acres, preventing it from growing larger.
These smaller fires are a reminder of why every response matters, even when it doesn't make the headlines.

🌲 What happens to forest materials after they leave the forest?
During National Forest Products Week, we’re highlighting the people and projects helping put these materials to work across California.
CAL FIRE supports wood products and bioenergy projects that strengthen California’s wood products infrastructure, support healthy, resilient forests and create economic opportunities for communities.
From turning forest materials into useful products to developing new opportunities for the forest-sector workforce, this work helps keep California’s forests and communities strong.

Protecting firefighter health and safety is essential to keeping our firefighters ready to respond.
Today, CAL FIRE Safety Program leadership joined fire service leaders, labor representatives, researchers, occupational medicine experts, federal partners and other stakeholders at the Cal/OSHA Wildland and Wildland Urban Interface Respiratory Protection Advisory Committee meeting in Sacramento.
Through collaboration with Cal/OSHA’s Wildland and Wildland Urban Interface Respiratory Protection Advisory Committee, CAL FIRE is helping advance efforts to develop regulations that better protect firefighters from on-the-job respiratory hazards.
CAL FIRE continues to invest in firefighter protection through expanded funding for personal protective equipment (PPE), improved equipment inspection, cleaning and accountability practices, and the procurement of specialized gear, including respiratory protection and heavy fire equipment operator helmets.
Protecting our firefighters means investing in their health, safety and readiness—on every incident and every shift.

🔥 What does “forward progress stopped” mean?
When firefighters say a fire’s forward progress has been stopped, it means crews have stopped the fire from continuing to spread.
It does not mean the fire is out or contained. Firefighters still have work to do.
Crews continue building and strengthening control lines, putting out hotspots, and checking the fire’s perimeter to reduce the chance of it spreading again.
Even after a fire stops advancing, firefighters may remain on scene for hours or days to make sure the fire is under control.

Good morning NorCal, happy Saturday! Elevated fire weather conditions continue across the Sierra & foothills today. RH values in the teens to 20s currently observed, with occasional gusts up to 25 mph possible as we move through the day. Keep practicing fire weather safety! #CAwx
Air and ground resources are actively working to contain the #NorteFire in Orange County.
CAL FIRE prepositioned resources were in the area and ready to support initial attack efforts, allowing additional resources to respond quickly. CAL FIRE’s aerial firefighting fleet, the largest civilian aerial firefighting fleet in the world, is supporting ground operations alongside partner agencies with water and retardant drops as firefighters work to contain the fire.
Under Red Flag Warning conditions, protecting lives and property and stopping the fire’s spread remain top priorities.

Not all smoke is the same.
Wildfire smoke and prescribed-fire smoke are not the same.
🔥 Wildfires can burn much larger areas, consume heavier fuel loads, and produce far more total particulate matter, carbon monoxide, and other pollutants. Their smoke can persist for days or weeks and travel hundreds or even thousands of miles, creating widespread and difficult-to-manage air-quality impacts.
🌲 Prescribed fire is a planned management tool. Burns are conducted under selected weather and fuel conditions, allowing managers to better control timing, intensity, and smoke dispersion. Prescribed fires still produce smoke, but they can reduce hazardous fuels, improve forest health, and help limit the size and intensity of future wildfires.
The goal isn't zero smoke; it's reducing the risk of catastrophic wildfire and the much larger smoke impacts that come with it.

🚩 RED FLAG WARNINGS EXTENDED, AREAS UPDATED 🚩
Red Flag Warnings have been extended in parts of California, and affected areas have been updated as critical fire weather conditions continue.
Warnings cover portions of the Sierra Nevada, Kern County Mountains, and Los Angeles and Ventura counties. Interior portions of San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties are also under a Red Flag Warning Friday from 3 a.m. to 6 p.m. In Lake County, a Fire Weather Watch remains in effect from late tonight through Friday afternoon.
Strong winds and low humidity can allow fires to spread rapidly. Embers are a leading cause of home ignition during wildfires. Is your home ready?

Critical Fire Weather Conditions continue across the Sierra Nevada and adjacent foothills through Friday. Gusty north to east winds and dry conditions will allow for easier fire starts and the potential for rapid fire spread. Remember to ALWAYS practice fire weather safety! #CAwx

ALT Critical fire weather conditions are expected today Oct 15 - Friday Oct. 16th, 2026 in the Sierra Nevada and adjacent foothills. Gusty north to east winds and low humidity values are the primary concerns. Gusts of 25 to 45 mph, daytime humidity values in the low teens to 20s with single digits possible. Image on the left of the graphic shows a helicopter over a wildfire, with the Weather Risk Matrix highlighting Orange (Moderate) for risks.
🚩 CRITICAL FIRE WEATHER! 🚩
Dry vegetation and strong winds will increase wildfire danger across parts of California starting early Thursday morning.
A Red Flag Warning is in effect:
🔹Sierra Nevada range and foothills: 12 a.m. Thursday to 10 a.m. Friday.
🔹Portions of Lake County: 4 a.m. Thursday to 2 p.m. Thursday.
🔹Los Angeles, Kern, and Ventura counties: early Thursday morning through 10 p.m. Friday.
A Fire Weather Watch is in effect Friday morning through Friday afternoon for the mountains of San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties.
In portions of Lake County, a Fire Weather Watch will take effect late Thursday night, after the Red Flag Warning expires, and remain in effect through Friday afternoon.
Why does this matter? Dry vegetation can ignite easily, and strong winds can quickly spread flames into new areas, making wildfires harder to control and threatening nearby communities.
Avoid any and ALL activities that could spark a wildfire. Keep your go-bag ready, know at least two evacuation routes, and be prepared to leave if an evacuation is ordered.
