In which I dissect Defra’s plans to license game shooting which, in a crowded field, would rank as amongst the most stupid and politically damaging rural policies of recent times @CAupdates
Licensing gamebird shooting means banning it first, writes the Countryside Alliance’s Tim Bonner, and a licence that can be pulled without warning would stop anyone investing in a shoot. shootinguk.co.uk/legislation…

The family farm tax was a catastrophic mistake. It should be consigned to history in this week’s Budget. Doing so would be the first step in the government repairing its relationship with rural Britain. #backbritishfarmers #budget2026

The Welsh Government has announced a consultation on their policy proposal to underground all new electrical cabling up to 132kV and to do away with any idea of steel lattice pylons. More to come when we have digested it but great news for campaigners who get a chance to be heard

Attending the practitioners meeting today in my role as the current chair of Gylfinir Cymru Curlew Wales group gave a significant insight in to all the work going on in Wales and on the border trying to conserve this iconic bird. Also brought home the problems we face.

Rural businesses need room to employ. Employers’ National Insurance adds pressure to businesses that rely on people to deliver their services. The government should cut the 15% rate or restore the previous £9,100 Secondary Threshold. Back rural employers and protect jobs. This Budget, it’s time for a rural reset. We must protect rural communities. For the past two years, the rural way of life has been under attack. The countryside is ready for a reset. This Budget will reveal whether the government is ready too.

Another blow to the countryside if the Chancellor goes down this road. Thousands of jobs risked. Politically problematic too. Racing is Britain’s second biggest spectator sport.
Huge pressure on John Healey to resist calls to hike betting taxes in the Budget

Great discussion with Jeremy Clarkson and Charlie Ireland on stage at #cpc26. Ministers and those who advise them should prioritise spending more time listening to experts like Charlie. His knowledge is second to none.

This is the right call. It is vital that critical decisions about the future of rural communities are taken by elected Ministers, not bureaucrats. Returning the important functions of these quangos to direct government control could go a long way to ending the accountability gap and cutting red tape for the custodians of our countryside.
