Under 30% of STEM postgraduate research students identify as female. Our first Maryam Mirzakhani Scholar will address the M in STEM.
Marta joins us in the autumn. We look forward to many more. Thanks to @xtxmarkets for principal funding. #WomeninMaths

It's only 5 tweets since Oxford Mathematician Alison Etheridge was last elected member of an organisation. Luckily no-one remembers tweets for more than 5 seconds so we can confidently announce Alison has been elected member of the National Academy of Sciences. @theNASciences

📢 Calling all UK Data Scientists 📢
In July, we'll be hosting the first-ever Wellcome Data Science Ideathon in our London office to bring together data scientists with innovative ideas that can help further Wellcome's work.

Our Andrew Wiles Building will be 10 in 2023. We’ll bake it a cake because in a digital world it's still a joy to have physical beauty, & library, lecture theatres & whiteboards (blackboards @AlainGoriely). And notepads are still in demand.

Highlight of 2022? Seeing new students hanging out in our Andrew Wiles Building unrestricted for the first time in 3 years to begin their mathematical exploration? And mingling, literally, with Conrad Shawcross’ magical gallery of mathematical art - supported by @xtxmarkets

A thread on asking questions in math talks.
This week I was at a 60th birthday conference, the first in-person conference I've been to since Covid that's more or less in my field, and I decided to do something radical: I decided to ask questions.

PhDay in the Life, Q&A: today we ambushed Seb to see what he was up to! For many, tutoring is an important aspect of PhD life... While it can take time away from your research, we like to think that the time and effort is worth the reward!

Addressing the underrepresentation of women studying for a DPhil (PhD) in mathematics in Oxford is a key priority for us @OxUniMaths. The Maryam Mirzakhani scholarship, a 4-year PhD generously funded by @xtxmarkets, enables us to do that.

A mathematical point of view.
Looking from the top floor of @OxUniMaths, down the Escher staircase to the mathematical crystal (shaping the frequencies of a drum) which is framed by Conrad Shawcross' stacks of twisting tetrahedral blocks.
Zoom in or zoom by some time.

We @OxUniMaths trust models, especially when crafted by our own @JoshuaABull. So let's face facts - or models - England have little chance (3.41%) of winning the World Cup. But Brazil & Argentina...

Understanding 'streams', complex sequences of data, is a key challenge of data science. Mathematical descriptions of streams - 'signatures' - provide invaluable insights into areas such as health & finance.

Every year I read a lot of grad school applications from accomplished people that don't give me the info I'm looking for. It feels like a major hidden curriculum thing. So here's (my opinion on) how to write a great Statement of Purpose/Research for a PhD program. 🧵 1/
