Odd remarks by French President Emmanuel Macron earlier today, appearing to suggest that the shooting in #Trappes, west of #Paris, was the first terrorist attack in #France in which someone targeted people because of the colour of their skin or their religion. Unfortunately, not quite true. - 2012 Toulouse: Mohamed Merah shot dead three Jewish children and a rabbi at the Ozar Hatorah school because they were Jewish. He was killed by police during a siege of his apartment. - 2015 Paris (Hyper Cacher): Amedy Coulibaly killed four Jewish hostages at a kosher supermarket after asking if they were Jewish. He was shot dead by police during the raid. - 2015 Villejuif: Sid Ahmed Ghlam planned a church attack (killed a woman while preparing; plot foiled). He was sentenced to life imprisonment (confirmed on appeal). - 2016 Saint-Étienne-du-Rouvray: Two Islamist attackers (Adel Kermiche and Abdel Malik Petitjean) slit the throat of Father Jacques Hamel during mass in his church. Both were killed by police at the scene. - 2017 Paris: Sarah Halimi, a Jewish woman, was beaten and thrown from her balcony by a neighbor (Kobili Traoré) shouting “Allahu Akbar” and calling her the “Sheitan.” He was ruled criminally irresponsible due to mental illness and confined to a psychiatric facility (no criminal trial). - 2018 Paris: Mireille Knoll, an 85-year-old Jewish Holocaust survivor, was stabbed and set on fire in her apartment by neighbors in an antisemitic killing. Main perpetrator Yacine Mihoub was sentenced to life imprisonment; an accomplice received 15 years for aggravated theft. - 2020 Nice: Brahim Aouissaoui stabbed to death three people (including the church sexton) inside Notre-Dame basilica, shouting “Allahu Akbar.” He was sentenced to life imprisonment without parole (perpétuité incompressible) in 2025.

1/5 What did Europe actually learn from Ceuta? The EU response has strengthened border control, surveillance, screening and reinforcement. But those measures do not resolve every counterterrorism vulnerability exposed by the crisis. A thread on our new report by @JunFGG 🧵

The Dutch Extreme Left: Violence, Connections, and Unanswered Questions How significant is the threat posed by the Dutch violent extreme left? "In recent years most terrorist organizations, particularly al-Qaeda and the Islamic State, have changed their tactics." "Instead of sending people to Europe to carry out attacks—training them abroad, bringing them in, and then deploying them there—they recruit individuals already in Europe, through social media and messaging platforms. They radicalize them, train them, and then these individual attackers or small groups carry out the attacks." Preserving Memory in Będzin and Łagisza On Monday October 12, representatives of ARCHER at House 88 participated in a Day of Remembrance organised by the Rutka Laskier Foundation in Będzin, southern Poland. The commemorations included the unveiling of two important memorial sites dedicated to preserving the history of the Jewish community and the victims of Nazi persecution. The first ceremony took place at the site of the former Jewish cemetery in Będzin, where a new Wall of Remembrance was unveiled to honour those whose lives were lost during the Holocaust and to preserve the memory of the city’s Jewish past. The second ceremony took place in Łagisza, where a new educational memorial plaque was unveiled, documenting the history of Lagischa, a subcamp of Auschwitz. ARCHER at House 88 was proud to contribute to the creation of this plaque, helping to ensure that the history of the prisoners and the Nazi concentration camp system remains visible and accessible to future generations. We extend our sincere appreciation to the Rutka Laskier Foundation and everyone involved in these important initiatives. Every place of remembrance matters. Every forgotten story deserves to be told. #ARCHER #House88 #RutkaLaskier #Będzin #Łagisza #Auschwitz #HolocaustRemembrance #JewishHeritage

A delegation from ARCHER (Auschwitz Research Center on Hate, Extremism and Radicalization) at House 88 – took part in a ceremony in Monowice commemorating the prisoners and victims of KL Auschwitz III-Monowitz. During the ceremony, a new memorial plaque dedicated to the history of Auschwitz III-Monowitz and those imprisoned and murdered there was unveiled. The plaque also recalls the story of Primo Levi (prisoner no. 174517), the Italian Jewish writer, chemist and Auschwitz survivor whose experience as a prisoner of Monowitz became the basis of his seminal testimony If This Is a Man. On behalf of ARCHER, Director Jacek Purski @jacekpurski and Piotr Wojtan laid flowers at the memorial in tribute to the victims. The plaque was created on the initiative of the local branch of Towarzystwo Opieki nad Oświęcimiem, an organization established in 1983 by former prisoners of Auschwitz-Birkenau and dedicated to preserving the memory and heritage of the camp and its victims. The project received the support of the Monowice District Council, local residents and the City of Oświęcim. Remembering Monowitz is an essential part of understanding the history of the Auschwitz camp complex and the system of forced labour, persecution and mass murder of which it was a part. We are grateful to the organizers, especially Dr Rafał Guzik, for the invitation and for their continued work to preserve and pass on the memory of the victims of Auschwitz III-Monowitz.
