People say this was reactionary but it really wasn't. You simply just don't understand what I mean. You're all talking about standards and culture and "taking accountability" but you can't see it when it's staring you in your face. Perhaps it’s my background in sports. Perhaps it’s just the way I am as a person but my view of winning standards is clearly on a different level to most people on here. Many arguments can be made for us not winning this match — such as what was clearly a poor tactical game from Xabi Alonso and what seemed like the Spurs players simply wanting it more throughout the game — none of those things were acceptable yesterday. However, the one thing I have been attacked for is criticising the club’s decision to keep Mike Penders and his performance today. My opinion on Penders has been consistent. He is an incredible talent who, IF developed correctly, can become one of the best goalkeepers in the world, if not the best, for over a decade. He is also a 21-year-old goalkeeper with errors in his game and things he is yet to learn. His season at Strasbourg made both of those things very clear to me. He is extremely gutsy in the box, but his timing is off too often and his decision-making in his area has a long way to go. He’s a great ball player for a goalkeeper, but he needs to learn risk analysis. He’s a very good shot-stopping prospect, but there are still aspects of his technique that need developing. Then there is the experience. Managing massive matches. Dealing with hostile atmospheres. Learning to not let opposition players get under his skin. These are things he needs to learn through playing football. I do not believe he is ready to be Chelsea’s number one if the ambition is to seriously compete. I also question whether being number two gives him the regular football required to fulfil his potential. That is why I wanted him to go on loan again. Vol 1 of this project was about signing the best young players possible and developing them together over multiple seasons. I backed that project. However, I never agreed with following that strategy in every position. Goalkeeper is a different position to anywhere else on the pitch. I always wanted an experienced, world-class option there. Someone who could give the team security while the players in front of him developed. The same applied to the manager. I wanted a leader with winning experience at the highest level. Vol 2 of this project is about winning. It’s about taking the step we have failed to take over the past four seasons. It’s about implementing standards and breeding a winning mentality. Winning should be the culture of the club. Now, from my understanding, other big clubs were circling Penders. The feeling was that if Chelsea sent him on loan again, he would push for a permanent exit. That played a part in the decision to keep him. I understand why the club would be reluctant to lose a goalkeeper with that potential. However, keeping him because we fear losing him does not automatically make it the correct sporting decision for this season. The club still has to assess whether he is ready for the responsibility he is being given. Penders wanted to stay. He backed himself to challenge for the number one spot. I respect that. I will always respect an athlete who backs themselves to succeed. I also disagree with his assessment and would have made a different decision to the club. Both of those things can be true. However, the decision was made. HE wanted to stay. HE backed himself. The club kept him. He is now a Chelsea goalkeeper, and his performances have to be assessed according to the responsibility that comes with that.
Mike Penders horror performance. I've been saying it for a long time but I can't for the love of me understand why he didn't go on loan. "He would push to leave because other clubs are interested" So f*cking what? He's a kid that needs to develop and Chelsea is not that place at this moment in time. If he wants to play week-in-week out at a massive club at 21 years old as a GK then you are about as delusional as you can get. Top talent. I like his attitude on the pitch but he's not a Chelsea goalkeeper in 2026.

Against Leeds, he almost punched the ball into his own net from a corner. We then conceded from another corner after he completely mistimed his jump. Against Tottenham, he punches the ball into his own net. The second goal is also a shot I expect a Chelsea goalkeeper to save. In my opinion, those mistakes cost us. Acknowledging that does not mean I suddenly think he has no talent. It means I am assessing what he did in that match and the consequences it had for Chelsea Football Club. When he is at fault, he needs to take accountability. Hold his hands up. Apologise to his teammates. That is part of being a professional athlete at this level. The counterargument I keep getting is that he is young, that he needs time to develop and that “he will come good”. Okay. I also believe he can come good. But what does that tell us about whether he is ready NOW? I am talking about the standard Chelsea need from their goalkeeper this season. People are responding by telling me how good he might be in five years. His age can explain why he makes certain mistakes. It does not make those mistakes any less costly, and it does not automatically justify the decision to put him in that position. This is Chelsea Football Club. This is the big leagues. If the stated ambition is to seriously compete, we cannot keep responding to performances below the required standard by moving the conversation back to potential. The whole point of another loan would have been to give him the regular football and experience needed to develop while Chelsea pursued their immediate ambitions. I want Penders to become the goalkeeper I believe he can become. I also want Chelsea to have the goalkeeping required to win now. If these mistakes are going to remain a regular thing — which would not be particularly surprising considering his age and experience — then he simply is not ready for the responsibility the club has given him. And if winning is now the priority, our decisions and our standards need to reflect that. “He will come good” is not enough.

It’s not just about keeping the ball, it’s about dominating territory, Klopp wasn’t a possession obsessed coach but he understood that you need to keep the ball far way from your final 3rd. No team is successful in the long term by constantly conceding territory.
Chelsea aren't a possession dominant club, that's not even how we play, its also not the only way to play. Xabi had 59% possession at Leverkusen, 60% at Real Madrid. His football isn't Pep ball. Its closer to Klopp than it is to Pep. Alonso is nothing like Maresca as a coach.

My criticism of Penders today isn't me blaming Penders. He did what we could realistically expect of him. Some good saves and some big mistakes. It is what it is. You can say "he's young" and "he will learn" but this is Chelsea Football Club. "Winning is our aim". If you want to learn and develop you can (and should) do it elsewhere. When you are Chelsea #1, you will be treated as such. The reality is that HE wanted to be here. HE didn't want to go on loan. Okay, so when YOU make a mistake that ultimately costs us a game then you will be scrutinized for that and you're going to have to own it. You're not "young, developing, super talented Mike Penders". You're Chelsea goalkeeper Mike Penders. My argument is that the club should never have put him in that position in the first place — but ultimately the final decision lies with Mike and his team.

Why, just why did Alonso think conceding possession and countering was a good plan? A team that has had so many fast starts lacked so much energy and impetus today, and allowed De Zerbi’s Spurs to control the game through possession. So disappointing, the team was played off the park for large portions of the match. I don’t understand constantly kicking it long either, without a striker - that was food and drink for Van Hecke. Zero idea to build up and play out the back, no Lavia or even Barco subbed on to come deep and get on the ball and start playing. Worst performance against Tottenham in years.

Kicking it long is a tactical plan — I never blamed him for that. I'm not really blaming him at all. I'm blaming Chelsea. He's clearly a massive talent but he's extremely raw. The own goal he scored today is no surprise. He almost scored the exact same own goal earlier in the season and he's consistently struggling with timing and decision making in the area. All of those things are natural for a 21-year old GK to struggle with — which is exactly why he should be playing elsewhere. Second goal you really do expect a top keeper who is 2 meters long to save as well. I don't doubt that he would save it 3 or 4 years from now. If he stays at Chelsea there are two potential outcomes. 1) He becomes the #1 — which he isn't remotely ready for. 2) He becomes a back-up — which is a killer for his career as a young man who needs to play as much as possible so that he can make mistakes and learn from them. For all the positives Chelsea did this summer — keeping Mike Penders was arguably the worst decision they made.
Replying to @CFCMJordan
He did well outside the mistake. I dont blame him for kicking it long because the setup today was dreadful. Playing on the break and conceding 70% poss at home to spurs with Caicedo in midfield is just plain brainless. Xabi better, better learn from this and fix the set up

Look at this Spurs defence. Stamford Bridge under the lights. Crowd rocking. 0.5 xG. 30% possession. Spurs more than twice as many shots as Chelsea. Red card jokers back. Only the second loss to Spurs at SB since 1991. Inexcusable performance from everyone involved.
Chelsea (0.50) 0-2 (0.81) Tottenham

Once a team of losers, always a team of losers. Absolutely f*cking pathetic. The performance has had this coming. Penders is absolutely inexcusable — as is Palmer. So much work needs to be done with this team. The last 3 games has been two steps forward, one step back. But regardless of individual performances — Alonso's tactics today was about as wrong as it could be.

Shocked.
It looks like James Maddison is injured.

Incredibly poor start to the game but we grew into it the last 10-15 minutes. I'd like to see us handle the ball slightly better. A bit of a bomb so far that the players can't get rid of fast enough. Our pressing has also been a bit off and we're too late into many situations — albeit this did slightly improve as the half went on — especially from Moi. I'd like to see Quenda demand more space on this pitch. It's his debut but he's playing a bit scared. This is your chance. It's up to YOU to take it. No one will take it for you. Hato excellent vs. Everton — sluggish today. Either wake up or give Palestra a chance. We can thank Penders for not being at least 1-0 down. Been a great performance from him so far.

No excuses to not win today btw. I don't give a sh*t that Joao Pedro is missing. Sh*t happens. Winners find a way to win regardless. Losers blame the circumstances.

My feeling is a back-4 with Neto and Quenda on the wings and Palmer/Rogers as interchangable strikers.

Quenda in the starting XI. Wow — that's a show of confidence from Xabi Alonso. The second time in 3 games Joao Pedro is missing from the squad. Next season with Europe (most likely) we really do need a better option than Danny Welbeck — who is a suberb number 3, imo. The fact that Alonso benches him for a teenager making his first start today indicates that he feels the same way.

He wouldn't start for Chelsea. Chelsea got big money and Jackson got a big move where he could be the main man and play for a manager he loves. It was a win-win.
Another one Chelsea were wrong to sell.

£65m for Nicolas Jackson is not too much, lol. Of all the wild asking prices we've set this summer — this isn't one of them.
🚨Aston Villa still dissuaded by asking price Chelsea have set for Jackson. Other suitors in Europe interested but Chelsea are resolute in their asking price. Genuine possibility Jackson could remain if asking price not matched but club are attempting to find solutions. Preference from #CFC and Jackson's camp is to avoid a loan.

Chelsea fans are the only fanbase that will go on parade after drawing against Arsenal. Imagine celebrating a DRAW like you’ve won the Champions League. Small-club mentality is a serious disease!

I can not understate how poor of an appointment Antonio Conte would be for Man Utd. Antonio Conte is a "win now" coach who won't last at any club for more than 2-2.5 years — meaning sooner rather than later, they will be in this exact position again. Problem is: Man Utd doesn't have a squad — or organization for that matter — to be able to win anything major in that timeframe. In other words, they'll win nothing and they'll be back where they are right now.
If we hire anybody BUT Antonio Conte, I won't be watching this club going forward He is practically begging for the job. If they hire Howe, McKenna, Hurzeller, Nagelsmann, Southgate etc then that just tells everyone they don't want a proper winner. They want a puppet yes man.

Chelsea is easily the best destination for Alex Scott — both personally and developmentally, imo. Both Chelsea and Liverpool are capable of matching his sporting ambitions — competing for major honors and becoming a regular England international. Both has a playing style that suits him. However, Iraola has already tought him all he can so imagine what he can learn as a midfielder playing for Xabi Alonso. He also gets to play with Moises Caicedo and, ironically, learn from Jordan Henderson. He also knows several players here such as Morgan Rogers, Cole Palmer, Reece James and Levi Colwill. Not to mention the groundwork Chelsea has already put in for him. I'm pretty certain he's already made the decision and Liverpool — or anyone else for that matter — would need to do significant work to change that. Not impossible but difficult.

Bournemouth winning makes it more likely that keeping their place looks likely in January — meaning Scott is more obtainable😎
