The UPL conversation is a pretty interesting one On one hand, I don’t agree with Paul Hamilton. If he goes on a run, nobody cares about Hellebuyck anymore and are chanting LUUUK On the other, if he crashes and burns on this road trip, how do you even bring him back to Buffalo?

Here’s the thing. He’s not done in this town The GM gave an endorsement of him on this show just a couple days ago. Could that be him just not commenting on ongoing trade talk? Sure. But that’s what he said. UPL is part of the future. Also, the fans of this team used to call Ryan Miller Mr. Softie. And there was a T-Shirt campaign where half the fan base was split between Team Miller and Team Enroth. So if he can’t handle the criticism than he’s never going to be a starting goalie. Or at least a good one Nobody is saying this team would be undefeated with Hellebuyck. But when you get out-goalied by guys like Vladar that’s a problem. Yeah you need to score. But sometimes you need your guy to steal you a game too UPL has had MORE than enough time and opportunity to figure it out in Buffalo. He’s played in nearly 200 games. And he’s proving once again to be what he’s been now for a couple years A streaky starter, but probably a really good back up. And that’s not good enough to win a Stanley Cup. Not on this team. That’s always been my issue with him. When push comes to shove. When it’s on the line. He shows you who he is. This position is as mental as it is physical. Even moreso mental. That’s what make the Hellebuyck’s great. They can handle the mental side of the game. The pressure. UPL has a lot of talent. He’s an athletic freak who can make the incredible save every game. But it’s the saves like the 3rd goal last night, in Game 2 vs Boston that @JeremyWGR brought up, and the Game 7 winner vs Montreal that ended their season that he doesn’t make That’s the difference. Hellebuyck makes those saves 99.9999999999% of the time. Thats why the fans want him I do think this seemingly never ending speculation needs to end soon, because it can’t be going over well in their goalie room. So they need to either make the trade, go with what they have, or find a Plan B. But this can’t keep bleeding further into the season
