Enlargement is a geopolitical imperative for Europe.
We need to prepare our institutions, uphold our standards and ensure a level playing field. Where necessary, we must safeguard our farmers as we manage the transition.
The goal is not simply a bigger EU. It is a stronger EU.
We've put forward a package on pre-enlargement policy reviews.
These set out the action needed to prepare the EU, as well as future countries joining.
At the same time, we seek to better protect EU values and the rule of law in the enlargement context.

The reported attack on a vessel carrying Ukrainian grain is deeply concerning.
Weaponising food & disrupting agricultural trade has consequences far beyond the battlefield: putting pressure on food prices & availability, and the risk of pushing millions more into food insecurity.
The situation in the Black Sea is increasingly concerning.
Commercial ships – and innocent crews – are being targeted, with lives already lost at sea.
Today, two commercial vessels were hit in Bulgaria’s economic zone in Black Sea.
This comes just one day after a Turkish ship carrying Ukrainian grain was struck and sunk off the Romanian coast.
While exact circumstances of these incidents are still being established, the developments are very concerning.
Attacks on civilian shipping are unacceptable.
We stand in full solidarity with our Member States on the Eastern flank.
With #EBAF, we had a very practical discussion: how can AI make life better for farmers?
Smarter crop management, ↘️paperwork & saving time, the potential is real. Our new R&I Strategy + ongoing work on AI will help turn Europe’s data & innovation into practical tools on farms.

With 143000+ schools already taking part, I want to keep the #EUSchoolScheme strong: mandatory, simpler & adapted to national realities.
Going back to school can be challenging, but at least we don’t have to worry about healthy food!🍎🥕🥛
Thanks to the EU School Scheme, children across Europe can enjoy fresh fruit, veggies & dairy products while learning more about farming and their food.
