🎉In need of really good news to start the new year!?
Species like the northern gannet (Morus bassanus) will have more peace during their migration through the northern coast of Spain.
Spain approved to extend their Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) and will add 6 new areas to the #Natura2000 network.
In numbers, this means:
🌊 An additional 9.3 million hectares will fall under Marine Protected Areas, so 21% of the Spanish marine surface will be protected, getting Spain closer to the goal of 30% by 2030.
🪶The expansion includes 2 Special Protection Areas (SPAs) for birds located along the Galician and Cantabrian coasts. The areas are migration hot spots for many seabirds during spring and autumn.
The development is a result of the project @LifeIntemares, one of the largest marine conservation projects in Europe to which our partner @SEO_BirdLife contributes with their knowledge and tireless work to protect our seas.
This new year starts with a truly special present and happy vibrato songs from all the gannets who will enjoy more protected areas.
