Here we see groups of visitors on a tour of the @CMSexperiment labs.
The groups visited the electromagnetic calorimeter (ECAL) and high-granularity calorimeter (HGCAL) labs, where new pieces of the CMS detector are created to cope with the higher number of collisions at the High-Luminosity #LHC.
ECAL measures the energies of electrons and photons, whereas HGCAL is a major upgrade of CMS, necessary to maintain excellent calorimetric performance in the detector’s endcaps during #HiLumiLHC operations.

Happy #WorldQuantumDay 💫
For this occasion, we asked CERN Theoretical physicist Enrique to play a quick True or False game, the #quantum edition.
CERN is celebrating the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology through a series of quantum-themed public events. The Quantum! season is a tribute to the people dedicating themselves towards pushing the boundaries of knowledge further through exploration and discovery.

Here we see the construction of the Tracker Barrel with Pixel-Strip (TBPS) modules, part of the major upgrade of the CMS detector for the High-Luminosity era of the Large Hadron Collider. #HiLumiLHC
The tracker consists of an ‘Inner Tracker’ and an ‘Outer Tracker’, and it will reconstruct the paths of charged particles as they travel through the detector.
The innovative design of the TBPS rings, currently in production, allow sensors to incline towards the beams colliding in the center of the detector, and therefore maximise its coverage. They are the first support structures in production for the new Tracker.

CERN's experiments are global efforts. The 2025 Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics honors over 13,000 researchers whose labors have led to the precise description the Higgs mechanism, the discovery of dozens of new particles, analysis of rare processes and matter-antimatter asymmetry and exploration of nature at the shortest distances and most extreme conditions. breakthroughprize.org/News/9… @CERN

Teamwork makes the dream work 💪
The Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) is one of CERN’s general-purpose detectors that boasts a broad physics programme ranging from studying the #StandardModel to searching for extra dimensions and particles that could make up #DarkMatter.
This #PhotoOfTheWeek features the installation process for several subsystems of the @CMSExperiment detector, dedicated to the measurement of luminosity and beam conditions.
#DidYouKnow that the CMS detector is built around a huge solenoid magnet which generates a field of 4 tesla – about 100.000 times the magnetic field of the Earth?

Today CERN’s #PhotoOfTheWeek brings you to the @CMSexperiment cavern. 🔍
CMS, or the Compact Muon Solenoid, is one of CERN’s general-purpose detectors at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC).
It has a broad physics programme ranging from studying the #StandardModel to searching for extra dimensions and particles that could make up #DarkMatter.
Here we have a view of the detector with its Endcap in an open position, something you don’t see often, as the detector closes before the #LHC is switched on and runs until the Year-end Technical Stop (YETS).

It might look like fairy lights, but it’s far more luminous than that 💡
Here we see a perforated beam screen, designed to protect the superconducting magnets that will integrate the high-luminosity upgrade of the Large Hadron Collider
On both sides of the @ATLASexperiment and @CMSExperiment detectors, the High-Luminosity #LHC will require new inner-triplet magnets to perform the final focusing of the proton beams before collision.
The octagonal shape of these beam screens optimises the beam aperture and allows including tungsten-based shielding to absorb the collision debris produced at the interaction point. #HiLumiLHC

After the discovery 💫
Over 12 years ago, the @ATLASExperiment and @CMSExperiment at the #LHC announced the discovery of a particle with characteristics consistent with those of the #HiggsBoson.
The discovery was recognised with the @NobelPrize in Physics 2013, awarded to François Englert and Peter Higgs for their theoretical work.
Since then, physicists have continued studying this mysterious particle to learn more about our #Universe. Watch Haider (ATLAS) and Cristina (CMS) share their perspective about the #Higgs, the last 70 years and upcoming decades of research, and its impact on society. #CERN70

Your package has been delivered 📦
On 15 November, the @CMSexperiment received a very big box containing the BTL–Tracker Support Tube (BTST).
BTST is a carbon-fibre cylindrical structure designed to sustain the future silicon Tracker and the Barrel Timing Layer (BTL), key components of the CMS detector during the upcoming #HiLumiLHC era.
In preparation for the high-luminosity upgrade of the Large Hadron Collider, all the particle detectors are undergoing vast changes to make the most out of the increased luminosity and to continue recording as many interesting collision events as possible.

Au revoir, heavy ions👋
We say goodbye to this year’s #HeavyIon run at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), marking the start of the year-end-technical-stop (YETS) for the entire CERN accelerator complex.
The LHC performed beautifully in its tenth year of operation, ending with exceptional data collection.
The integrated luminosity of the proton run, which denotes the number of collisions recorded, reached almost double the best performance achieved in previous runs, with124 inverse femtobarns for both the @ATLASexperiment and the @CMSexperiment.
Later, during the 17-day lead-ion run, an integrated luminosity of 1.98 inverse nanobarns was delivered to the @ALICEexperiment, an equivalent amount to last year.
Particles are set to return to the accelerator chain at the beginning of March 2025 and to the LHC at the beginning of April.
