October is Healthy Lung Month which makes a good opportunity to reinforce vaccination conversations with patients, particularly those managing chronic respiratory conditions like asthma. Flu and pneumococcal vaccines remain key tools for reducing the risk of serious respiratory illness and complications in vulnerable populations. As trusted sources of guidance, providers play a critical role in addressing vaccine hesitancy and ensuring patients understand how immunization fits into their broader respiratory care plan. National Get Ready Day is a useful annual prompt to revisit influenza vaccination counseling with patients, particularly with those who are managing chronic respiratory conditions. Patients with asthma and COPD face a measurably higher risk of severe outcomes from influenza, and respiratory viral infection remains one of the most common triggers of fall asthma exacerbations. A brief, proactive vaccination conversation at any visit this month can meaningfully reduce exacerbation risk heading into respiratory virus season. A few conversation points worth reinforcing with patients: ✅ Annual flu vaccination is recommended for nearly all patients 6 months and older, with particular importance for those with chronic respiratory or cardiac disease ✅ Vaccination timing in September/October allows protection to build ahead of peak transmission ✅ For asthma patients specifically, flu vaccination is one of the most evidence-backed, low-cost interventions to reduce exacerbation risk Share our trustworthy resources with your network: allergyasthmanetwork.org/new… #GetReadyDay #Immunization #AsthmaManagement #PreventiveCare
