"Give us our future, we've had enough of your past. Give us our country to live in, to grow in, to love" - Michael Collins #michaelcollins #irishhistory
#onthisday Irish patriot Michael Collins was born. He'd be 130 years old. Our youngest ever government Minister, leader of the government (as President of the Executive) and head of the army in 1922. #todayinhistory #irishhistory

We move to phase 3 on Mon 29th June. Very low levels of #COVID19. What worries me most now is travel from overseas and I fear many planning foreign trips. 2020 is a year for a staycation. Stay in Ireland, spend locally and follow public health advice. @roinnslainte @HSELive – at South Dublin, Ireland

I spent a lot of time in the graveyards of Sydney & Melbourne visiting Irish graves. Irish epitaphs engraved without translation is normal, beautiful and respectful. Condolences to the family of Margaret Keane of Coventry caught up in this uneducated political nonsense.

The next 7 days are vital. Now is the time to #FlattenTheCurve. Every one of us must play our part; 1. Reduce your social contacts – see only a handful of people in your network 2. Distance yourself 2 metres from people in shops & supermarkets #COVID19 #SocialDistancing

This day 105 years ago – 25 April 1914 – around 25,000 rifles were smuggled into Larne, Co. Antrim in order to arm Ulster Volunteers opposed to Home Rule. The weapons were bought from Imperial Germany. Major Frederick H. Crawford of the British Army was the principal organiser.

This day 99 years ago – 25 March 1920 – the first Black and Tans arrived in Ireland. Winston Churchill is credited for suggesting “a force of 8,000 old soldiers be raised at once to reinforce the R.I.C. [police]” against the IRA, though this has been disputed by some historians.
