.@CPopeHC on why we should shift the safety net toward younger Americans:
"One of the big problems that we've had in entitlement policy is that we have these enormous, enormous benefits, trillions of dollars for the elderly, and if you take them away, the beneficiary is maybe the bond market...that's not a voter. There are no winners.
But the actual winner of not redistributing so much to old age are people earlier in life who have their real needs, and the way to reform a oversized retirement state is to allow people to take from it earlier in their life cycle when the money is more needed."

Working-age Americans are three times more likely than seniors to be unable to pay utility bills, to skip meals, or to miss health appointments due to lower incomes.
They are twice as likely to report living in houses with pest problems, and 50% more likely to live in neighborhoods that leave them feeling unsafe from crime.
Federal policy rightly does much to assist the nation’s seniors, @CPopeHC writes. But it should be reformed to recognize that Americans often need more help earlier in their lives.

This book is worth reading. Well written and gives tons of ideas!!!
Everyone knows what conservatives don't like about the welfare state.
It's time for a right-of-center vision of what it *should* be doing:

Technology improvements have in many specialties reduced the time it takes to perform procedures, so constant fees yield increasing revenues per day.

In this morning's @Paragon_Inst newsletter, I highlighted @CPopeHC's work.
The title is The Case Against Medicaid Managed Care, and the case is very strong.
Medicaid needs reform, and the growth of managed care in the program deserves more scrutiny.

What if many of the most widely accepted assumptions about the welfare state are wrong?
In The American Way of Welfare, @CPopeHC of @ManhattanInst challenges conventional wisdom about poverty, inequality, and taxation.

Before the Medicaid managed care plan lobbying organization in the fall of 2024, I debated Chris Jennings.
I said that I’ve seen no evidence that managed care in Medicaid improved quality or lowered costs. I asked for examples…and I’ve still not received anything!
Why do states subcontract Medicaid to private insurers if the government provides all the money, tells the insurers what they must cover and how much they have to pay for it, and doesn’t competitively bid the contracts?

This is true. Consolidated and unconsolidated markets have the same crazy, irrational prices
Healthcare consolidation makes for a politically convenient scapegoat, but blaming it for rising costs misdiagnoses the problem.

Among other things, great excerpt where then-VP Biden is going through the list of tax hike proposals and realizes the Democratic caucus isn't really in agreement on most of them.
The recent flurry of Dem tax cut promises were preceded by this reality:

Big myth of the 340B program is rural and safety net hospitals are the primary beneficiary. In fact it is by comparison wealthier hospitals with large commercial payor mixes that reap the lions share of the benefit. What happens to revenue when two hospitals with different payor mixes prescribe/administer the same drug.

Something about this seems off: "The number of urban hospitals that also classify as rural facilities has increased dramatically since 2017.."
