My dad would occasionally mention childhood holidays at his Uncle Billy’s house in Portsmouth, and talk about how he loved his garden. I remember Dad describing a long narrow garden, with a veggie plot at the bottom, and tobacco plants that smelled amazing in the evenings...

I decided to have a go at growing them this year (because, yeah, I’m sentimental) and they’ve flowered for months on end. These are Nicotiana alata Lime Green (I ordered them from @promessedefleur) – really easy to get going from seed. Will be trying more varieties next year…

‘Witty, warm, and full of unexpected pleasures.’ It was an unexpected pleasure for me to spot my novel, Good Taste, being recommended on the @PineConeAcorns blog. Thank you so much for reading and sharing, Elizabeth! ❤️#FoodFiction #HistFic @simonschusterUK @WmMorrowBooks

I've been listening to #TheGoldenHours by @rileypurefoy this week & it's been a delight to be transported back into the world of the Cazalets. Just as warm, bright, charming & panoramic as the original novels - & with beautiful narration by @indiravarma♥️#audiobooks @audibleuk

After listening to @bookclubpodhq this week, hearing love (rightly) heaped upon J.L. Carr's #AMonthintheCountry, I *had* to read it again. I swear, this book subtly shapeshifts and offers up new nuggets of joy on each re-reading. #amreading #recommendedreading

It’s January 1942 and grandad is reviewing the catering on board HMT Dunera… but by February it’s all beginning to take a darker turn. #WW2 (Photograph ‘On deck, H.S.M. DUNERA’ from @I_W_M collection, taken in 1939. Image: IWM (H 970))

(HMT stands for Hired Military Transport. Dunera was a British passenger ship prior to the war. In 1940 it had controversially been used to transport 2,542 "enemy aliens" to Australia....

These included 200 Italian and 251 German prisoners of war, and several dozen Nazi sympathizers, but the majority were Italian and German civilians. Most of them were Jewish refugees.)

I cut the tops of my leggy #tomatoes today (cos Monty says etc), but thought they were too pretty to go directly in the compost. #gardening

My garden is quietly buzzing this afternoon. Every sedum flower is clustered with bees. 🐝

It’s Day 1 of our #HeritageOpenDays2026 exhibition: #BeyondTheUniform Ten Lives in Ten Days, starting with Colchester Ladies Hairdresser, Hubert Snow, who served with the Tank Corps. He went on to become Tank Corps OCA member No.1 and wore his old Tankie jacket for gardening! 🙂

It’s January 1942 and the Duchess of Atholl has docked in #Durban. Grandad and his pal, Jock, are having a night out (and a trip to Woolworths) before they board HMT Dunera and head off to Java… #WW2

Ted & I picked #brambles on our afternoon #dogwalk... ok, maybe it was more me than him. It was a beautiful afternoon for a mooch, but there’s definitely a hint of autumn about now. 🐕

I’ve got to a point in my grandad’s #FEPOW diary where precious Hershey's Tropical Chocolate Bars are very occasionally arriving in @RedCross parcels… which makes me think about the film of JG Ballard’s Empire of the Sun (“Hey kid, want a Hershey bar?")... (1/3)

T’Internet tells me that the procurement division of the US army asked Hershey’s to develop a heat-resistant chocolate bar for issue to military personnel in warm climates. Hershey’s Tropical Chocolate bars still held their shape after 1 hour in 120 degrees Fahrenheit. (2/3)

Grandad has also just been issued with a bar of “Hershey’s Almonds & Chocolate” (no comment as to how that’s holding up in Japan). hersheyarchives.org/encyclop… @Hersheys #HersheyBar (3/3)
