Should we phase out Social Security? Social Security's retirement trust fund is projected to run out in 2032, and if Congress does nothing, benefits get cut by 22%. A Cato Institute budget expert who wants to replace it with a simpler safety net and a labor economist who wants to expand it debate whether the program is worth saving. Arguing Yes: @RominaBoccia Director of Budget and Entitlement Policy at @CatoInstitute and co-author of "Reimagining Social Security: Global Lessons for Retirement Policy Changes" Arguing No: @tghilarducci, Professor of Economics and Policy Analysis at @nssrnews and author of "Work, Retire, Repeat: The Uncertainty of Retirement in the New Economy" @JohnDonvan moderates. Nearly 190,000 home health workers in New York could unionize in one of the biggest U.S. labor drives in decades. SEIU Local 1199 says they've gotten almost 70,000 signatures, enough to trigger a massive union vote, and now the union has petitioned the National Labor Relations Board to hold an election. nytimes.com/2026/09/22/nyreg…

“As the largest employer in North America and with annual gross profits last year of $171 billion, Walmart has tremendous resources with which to fight off unions, and has developed a sophisticated playbook for doing so. It is not surprising that the company that labor historian Nelson Lichtenstein has called the “template organization” of neoliberal capitalism should have been, for most of its existence, an impenetrable anti-union fortress.  This is why we should appreciate the weight of some recent news from Canada’s warehousing sector: on May 7, 2026, eight hundred workers at a Walmart Regional Distribution Center in Mississauga, Ontario won a two-year contract after certifying their union with Unifor Local 252 in 2024. It is a truly historic victory, and a story that ought to be studied for its broader implications.” phenomenalworld.org/analysis…

The answer to union contracts being voted down is not for organizers to lower workers’ expectations. It’s to seize that vote as an opportunity to organize those expectations into collective power. jacobin.com/2026/08/unions-n…
