We had a fantastic time yesterday at the #YouTurnVAWGConference2023!
The knowledge, experience and insight across all the speakers was truly incredible, while the conference itself provided an invaluable opportunity to increase our awareness on the impact of sexual trauma.

I trained a residential staff team a couple of weeks ago. At the end, one man was taking ages to leave. He was waiting for everyone else to go first. When they’d all left he said ‘I’ve hung back to say - I’m 49 years old - and nobody has never told me it wasn’t my fault before’.

Cath: I've got fantastic colleagues. You can't make difficult decisions in isolation. I can always call or chat with a colleague to tap into my support network and because of that, I can provide that support to others and organisations too.

Helen: Vicarious trauma is real. Sometimes I turn off the news, play games on my phone & zone out. Reflective practice, getting together as a team and having fun. Sometimes it feels wrong, but it has to be done. You have to look after yourself so you can look after others.

Andy: We are the future. Visualising where people can be, how safe they can be and how you can be the hero you would have needed in those circumstances.

Q4: How do you keep balance and see the hope when working in the world of safeguarding?
Rabiya: Work-life balance. Calling a colleague & having support network. Remembering we're all here to create positive outcomes for people. We're doing what we can.

Q3: What are the differences between the needs of young people who are migrants and how do they differ?
Rabiya: An appreciation of intersectionality. We need to listen to the voices of people with lived experience. Work with them, it's not about doing things 'to' people.

Helen: Don't doubt yourself and your skills. If you make the environment safe, at their level then you will open up a wealth of discussion.

Q2: How can we do meaningful work with young people who might not otherwise engage with us?
Andy: Everyone needs counter-narrative. You can 'be the hero they need at that time'. Let young people see that this is a way out, there is another way.

Q1: How do we keep up with changes in the world and understand the experiences of young people?
Helen: How about youth advisory board, peer support network or engaging with champions of young people in your local schools. Give them the opportunity to talk about what its like.
