🌎 NEW: LCI began to roll out California's Fifth Climate Change Assessment today!
California’s climate is changing, bringing rising temperatures, more extreme wildfires, declining snowpack and growing risks to communities across the state.
The newly released Fifth Climate Change Assessment brings together dozens of reports featuring the latest climate science, tribal knowledge and community perspectives to help California better understand climate risks and prepare for the future.
Key findings include:
🌡️ Rising temperatures: California’s average temperatures are projected to increase by 3.5–4.3°F by 2050 compared to the 1981–2010 baseline.
❄️ Declining snowpack: Early April snowpack is projected to decrease by approximately 40% by mid-century, affecting water supplies, ecosystems and local economies.
🔥 Growing wildfire risks: Wildfire smoke exposure and associated health risks are increasing, with disproportionate impacts on vulnerable communities.
The Fifth Assessment also highlights the importance of tribal knowledge, community-informed research and locally relevant climate data in strengthening resilience.
📍 These findings will help inform planning, policies and investments at the local, regional, Tribal and state levels, supporting science-based decisions that protect California communities.

💜National Women’s Equality Day, August 26, commemorates the certification of the 19th Amendment in 1920, which granted many women the constitutional right to vote. It also serves as a reminder that the pursuit of equality and opportunity continues.
California played an important role in the women’s suffrage movement. In 1911, California became one of the first states to grant women the right to vote—nearly a decade before the 19th Amendment extended that right nationwide.
We honor the generations of advocates who expanded civic participation and recognize the women who continue to strengthen our communities through leadership, public service, innovation, and civic engagement.
Building stronger, more resilient communities means creating opportunities for everyone to participate, lead, and help shape California’s future. If you’re eligible, make your voice heard by registering to vote or checking your voter registration through the California Secretary of State.
🔗 In honor of Women’s Equality Day, check your voter status on the California Secretary of State website. You can update your address, register to vote, preregister to vote if you are between 16 and 18 years old, or even change your party preference. Learn more: voterstatus.sos.ca.gov

Twelve years ago today, in the early hours of a Sunday morning, a magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck just south of Napa, Calif.
It was the largest earthquake in the San Francisco Bay Area in more than 25 years, and the first to rupture on the surface since the 1906 earthquake, according to the USGS.
The shaking caused significant damage to many buildings in downtown Napa, including the historic 1870 courthouse. A few homes even shifted off their foundations.
In the month following the mainshock, there were 80 aftershocks of M1.8 and higher, including a M4.1 approximately 10 months later.
It serves as a strong reminder that California is an earthquake country. @Cal_OES encourages everyone to download the MyShake App to get an alert seconds before you feel the shaking.
Your preparation matters.
Wildfires can grow quickly, threaten communities and force evacuations with little notice. But there are steps you can take now to be ready:
➡️ Get your go-bag ready with essentials.
➡️ Know your evacuation routes and identify more than one way out.
➡️ Stay informed about active wildfires and emergency alerts.
➡️ Leave early when evacuation orders are issued.
